What research says about personality “types”

Psychologists usually describe personality with traits that vary by degree, not with boxes. In 2018 a Northwestern University team analysed questionnaire data from more than 1.5 million people and reported four clusters, which they called average, reserved, role model and self-centred. Even that study comes with caveats: its algorithm first found about 16 clusters before the researchers narrowed them, and co-author William Revelle stressed that the groups are “more continuous” than fixed types. Being intelligent or emotional is not a personality type at all, and introversion and extraversion are two ends of one scale. Enjoy the quiz as a game; the 2018 widget may no longer load.
