40 Powerful Social-Issue Ads and the Causes Behind Them

Social-Issue Advertising: Visual Ideas and the Claims They Carry

The best social-issue advertisements work in seconds. A single image, a twist on an everyday object or a line of copy makes you see a familiar problem from a new angle, and the idea stays with you long after you have walked past the poster. That is exactly what charities, health agencies and campaign groups need: attention first, then reflection, and ideally a change in behaviour.

This collection brings together forty well-known print and outdoor campaigns from agencies around the world, on topics from road safety and smoking to human rights, child protection and wildlife. For each one you will find what the ad shows, who made it where known, and what the issue behind it really looks like today. Statistics printed on old posters are dated, so where a figure is worth checking, the current picture is given alongside it.

The advertising pioneer Howard Gossage, admired by David Ogilvy, is often quoted as saying that advertising is too powerful a tool to be used only for commercial purposes. These campaigns are an argument in his favour. A few are disturbing by design; the most graphic images below are blurred and open with a tap or click.

Human rights, equality and free expression

Torture victims are people just like you and me

Torture Victims Are People Just Like You And Me

For the Swiss organisation ACAT (Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture), Advico Y&R in Zurich printed bound hands on the backs of bus and cinema seats, so the person in front of you suddenly seemed tied up. The placement turns a distant human-rights issue into something sitting right in front of the viewer. It is a classic example of using the setting itself as the medium.

Your skin colour shouldn’t dictate your future

Your Skin Color Shouldn’t Dictate Your Future
Your Skin Color Shouldn’t Dictate Your Future

Made by Publicis Conseil in Paris for LICRA, the French anti-racism league, these images show newborns in a maternity ward. The black baby is already dressed in a cleaner’s or road worker’s uniform while the others lie in nappies. The point is that discrimination can shape a child’s chances before they have done anything at all.

Unhate

Unhate
Unhate

Benetton’s 2011 Unhate campaign, created by its in-house research centre Fabrica, used digitally altered photos of world leaders kissing, here Hu Jintao and Barack Obama, and Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy. The images were obviously fake and deliberately provocative, meant to promote reconciliation between rivals. The campaign drew official objections, and Benetton withdrew one image showing Pope Benedict XVI after the Vatican protested.

Censorship tells the wrong story

Censorship Tells The Wrong Story

This Reporters Without Borders poster, credited in compilations to Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai, takes an ordinary handshake between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and adds a pixelated block that makes it look scandalous. The message: when information is blurred or removed, people fill the gap with the worst assumptions. It is a sharp argument for press freedom.

UN Women: what auto-complete says about women

UN Women: Auto-Complete Shows Perceptions Of Women
UN Women: Auto-Complete Shows Perceptions Of Women

In 2013 UN Women ran these posters, created by Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai, using real Google auto-complete suggestions for phrases such as “women need to” and “women should”. The results, like “be put in their place”, cover the women’s mouths. Some older reposts credit Lowe GGK in Warsaw, but that agency made a different ad in the same original list. Auto-complete results change over time, yet the campaign is still widely taught as an example of using data to reveal prejudice.

Child soldiers: it’s not happening here, but it’s happening now

Child Soldiers: It’s Not Happening Here, But It’s Happening Now

For Amnesty International Switzerland, art director Pius Walker placed transparent panels in Swiss streets showing an armed child framed against the real background behind. The viewer sees a peaceful street and a child soldier at the same time. The United Nations still documents the recruitment of thousands of children by armed groups each year.

Road safety

Stop the violence: don’t drink and drive

Stop The Violence: Don’t Drink And Drive

For the Brazilian highway operator Ecovia, Terremoto Propaganda in Curitiba painted two cars on a fist and a face, so a punch becomes a crash. Comparing drink-driving to deliberate violence reframes it as a choice to hurt someone, not an accident.

Slower is better

Elm Grove Police Department: Slower Is Better

Cramer-Krasselt in Milwaukee adapted a roadside speed sign for the Elm Grove Police Department in Wisconsin. Instead of showing a driver’s speed, it showed the number of days a crash victim might spend in hospital. Turning an abstract number into a personal consequence is a well-tested road-safety technique.

Bangalore Traffic Police: don’t talk while driving

Bangalore Traffic Police: Don’t Talk While Driving
Bangalore Traffic Police: Don’t Talk While Driving

Mudra Group in India staged scenes of people on the phone being splattered with blood, as if the crash were happening at the other end of the line. The ads target the person at home as well as the driver, suggesting that calling someone behind the wheel makes you part of the risk. Phone use while driving is now banned or restricted in most countries.

Distracted driving: think of both sides

Distracted Driving: Think Of Both Sides

Red Pepper in Ekaterinburg, Russia, shows a driver on the phone and a passenger with a map, both absorbed while a child appears in the windscreen. The line beneath warns that accidents involving children rise during school holidays. Looking away for two seconds at city speed means travelling many metres effectively blind.

Tailgating isn’t worth it

Tailgating Isn’t Worth It. Give Trucks Room

The Amélie Company in Denver built a billboard that looks crumpled by a car wedged under a truck’s rear. Following too closely is one of the most common causes of rear-end collisions, and trucks need far more distance to stop than cars. The three-dimensional billboard makes that physics impossible to ignore.

Sleepiness is stronger than you

Sleepiness Is Stronger Than You. Don’t Drive Sleepy

For ThaiHealth, BBDO Bangkok drew a tiny car struggling to hold up a drooping eyelid. Drowsy driving slows reactions in a way often compared to alcohol, and microsleeps of a few seconds can be fatal at speed. The only real cure is stopping to rest.

The prevention beer mug

The Prevention Beer Mug: Please Don’t Lose Control Over Your Drinking

Euro RSCG Prague designed a beer glass whose handle sits where a fist would strike a woman’s face, linking heavy drinking with domestic violence. The red tag pleads with drinkers not to lose control. Alcohol is a well-documented factor in many cases of intimate-partner violence.

Buckle up. Stay alive

Buckle up. Stay alive

For Quebec’s road-safety authority, Lg2 printed a birth year on a T-shirt, with the seat belt covering where a death year would go. Wearing a belt is the single simplest way to survive a crash, and it is now compulsory in most countries.

Health: smoking, body image and pollution

Premature ending

Premature Ending: “If you smoke, statistically your story will end 15% before it should.”

For a quit-smoking line, Iris in London printed books whose story ends early, with “The End” arriving about 15 percent before the last page. The figure is a simplification, but the World Health Organization says tobacco kills more than seven million people a year, including more than a million non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke.

What we see when you smoke

What We See When You Smoke

JWT Atlanta placed a poster at exhaust-pipe height, so a car’s fumes appeared to come out of a smoker’s mouth. The point is that second-hand smoke is not harmless background air for the people nearby. There is no known safe level of exposure.

Smoking causes premature ageing

Smoking Causes Premature Aging

For Nicorette, Euro RSCG Australia showed an elderly-looking woman blowing out candles on a cake reading 42. Smoking speeds up skin ageing by damaging collagen and blood supply, alongside its far more serious effects on the heart and lungs.

Causing cancer by yourself

Causing Cancer By Yourself

Dentsu Beijing turned public ashtrays into lung X-rays, so each stubbed-out cigarette lands in a chest. It is a direct reminder that the habit and the disease are the same object.

Air pollution kills

Air Pollution Kills 60.000 People A Year

A building chimney becomes the barrel of a revolver in this outdoor ad, whose agency is unknown. The 60,000 deaths a year on the poster was an older estimate for one country. Today the WHO links outdoor and household air pollution together to about 6.7 million premature deaths worldwide each year.

You’re not a sketch. Say no to anorexia

You’re Not A Sketch. Say No To Anorexia

Revolution Brasil placed a fashion sketch next to a real woman retouched to the same impossible proportions. Fashion illustrations exaggerate thinness on purpose; bodies cannot. Anorexia has one of the highest death rates of any mental illness, and anyone worried about eating should talk to a doctor.

Breast cancer awareness bra

Breast Cancer Awareness Bra

Bolero in Fortaleza, Brazil, attached pink-ribbon tags to bras in lingerie shops, with a reminder to do regular breast checks at the moment women were already thinking about their bodies. Placing the message at the point of action is a smart, low-cost idea. Screening recommendations differ by age and country, so a doctor is the right person to ask.

Environment and wildlife

WWF: frightening versus more frightening

World Wide Fund For Nature: Frightening vs. More Frightening

DDB&Co. in Istanbul shows two seascapes for WWF: one with a shark fin, labelled horrifying, and one empty, labelled more horrifying. An ocean without predators is a sign of a broken ecosystem. Overfishing has pushed many shark species into decline.

Deforestation continues with the turn of a page

Deforestation Continues With The Turn Of A Page

LINKSUS in Beijing printed a tree on a magazine page with a stump cut-out, so turning the page “fells” it. The ad links everyday paper use with forest loss, though today much paper comes from recycled fibre and managed plantations.

Save paper, save the planet

Save Paper – Save The Planet

Saatchi & Saatchi Copenhagen printed a green map of South America on a towel dispenser for WWF. Each towel pulled out drains green from the continent, a simple prompt to use one sheet instead of three.

If you don’t pick it up, they will

Bird Conservation: If You Don’t Pick It Up They Will

TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris in Johannesburg used the image of a dead seabird with its stomach full of plastic. Photos of albatross chicks on Pacific islands with plastic in their remains have become one of the most powerful symbols of ocean pollution. Seabirds mistake floating plastic for food and feed it to their young.

Every 60 seconds a species dies out

Every 60 Seconds a Species Dies Out. Each Minute Counts

For the German environmental group BUND, Scholz & Friends in Berlin showed a seal crushed by a clock’s hands. The headline figure is a campaign estimate; scientists give a wide range for current extinction rates. Most agree, though, that species are disappearing far faster than the natural background rate.

Plastic bags kill

Global Action In The Interest of Animals: Plastic Bags Kill

For Global Action in the Interest of Animals (GAIA), Duval Guillaume in Belgium printed sea creatures on plastic bags so it looked as if each shopper carried a suffocated animal; BBDO Malaysia ran a similar idea. Many countries have since banned or charged for single-use bags.

What goes around comes around: keep the sea clean

What Goes Around Comes Around. Keep The Sea Clean
What Goes Around Comes Around. Keep The Sea Clean

JWT Dubai presented sushi and mussels made from rubbish. Plastic and pollutants dumped at sea return through the food chain, and microplastics have been found in seafood around the world.

When you see a tuna, think panda

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society: When You See A Tuna, Think Panda

For Sea Shepherd, Ogilvy & Mather Singapore replaced a fishing boat’s tuna catch with bloodied pandas. People feel protective of pandas, yet several tuna species have been heavily overfished. Bluefin stocks in particular have needed strict international quotas to recover.

Deforestation and the air we breathe

Deforestation And The Air We Breathe: Before It’s Too Late

TBWA\Paris drew a pair of lungs out of a forest seen from above for WWF, with one lung cleared. Forests store carbon and regulate climate and rainfall, which is why their loss affects everyone, not only nearby communities.

Protecting children and animals

Innocence in Danger: where’s the paedophile?

Innocence In Danger: Where’s The Pedophile?
Innocence In Danger: Where’s The Pedophile?

Art director Michael Arguello and copywriter Bassam Tariq turned crowded beach and stadium scenes into a “Where’s Wally” puzzle with no answer. The point is that abusers do not look different from anyone else. Child-protection groups stress that most abuse is committed by someone the child already knows.

Sexual predators can hide in your child’s smartphone

Herezie in Paris made a companion poster for Innocence in Danger showing a phone in a young person’s back pocket, warning parents about online grooming. Groups such as Innocence in Danger advise parents to talk openly with children about who they speak to online and to use age-appropriate privacy settings.

Neglected children are made to feel invisible

Neglected Children Are Made To Feel Invisible. Stop Child Abuse Now

For the Australian Childhood Foundation, JWT Melbourne pasted posters over child mannequins. When other bill posters inevitably covered them, a second message appeared about neglect. Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment in many countries and often the least visible.

That’s not a football

Animal Anti-Cruelty League: That’s Not A Football

For the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Lowe Bull in Cape Town placed a Dalmatian puppy where a ball should be on a football pitch. The image is unsettling precisely because it is so ordinary, reminding viewers that cruelty often starts as “just a game”.

Same pet, different owner

Animal Abuse And Shelters: Same Pet, Different Owner
Animal Abuse And Shelters: Same Pet, Different Owner

TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno in the Philippines placed before and after photos of rescued animals side by side for CARA Welfare Philippines. The only difference is how they were treated. Adopting from a shelter gives an animal a second chance and frees space for the next one.

Guess which one is banned

One Child Is Holding Something That’s Been Banned In America To Protect Them. Guess Which One?
One Child Is Holding Something That’s Been Banned In America To Protect Them. Guess Which One?

Grey Toronto created these images in 2013 for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. In each, one child holds an assault-style rifle and another a Kinder Surprise egg or a copy of Little Red Riding Hood, items that had been banned or challenged in the United States for child-safety or moral reasons. The contrast questions which risks a society chooses to regulate.

Poverty, volunteering and war

Liking isn’t helping

Liking Isn’t Helping. Be A Volunteer. Change A Life
Liking Isn’t Helping. Be A Volunteer. Change A Life

For Crisis Relief Singapore, Publicis Singapore surrounded real scenes of suffering with dozens of thumbs-up hands. The message is a direct challenge to online slacktivism: a like on social media does not feed anyone or bandage a wound. Volunteering and donating do.

See how easy feeding the hungry can be?

See how easy feeding the hungry can be?

For FEED SA in South Africa, TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris printed a hungry child at the bottom of supermarket trolleys, so dropping in an extra can looks like handing over food. Supermarket donation points remain one of the simplest ways to support food banks.

For the homeless, every day is a struggle

For The Homeless, Every Day Is A Struggle

Clemenger BBDO in Melbourne placed a knife and fork beside the opening of a public bin. It is a blunt picture of how some people are forced to eat. Homelessness charities point out that most homeless people are not visible sleeping rough but move between shelters, cars and friends’ sofas.

What goes around comes around: stop the Iraq war

What Goes Around Comes Around: Stop The Iraq War
What Goes Around Comes Around: Stop The Iraq War

Big Ant International in New York wrapped posters of a soldier and a tank around lamp posts so the gun barrel pointed at the back of the figure’s own head. Created during the Iraq war of the 2000s, it argues that violence comes back to those who use it. The design is still widely shared as an example of ambient advertising.

Do shocking social ads actually work?

Striking images reliably win attention and awards. Whether they change behaviour is a harder question. Research on public-health campaigns suggests that fear or shock works best when it is paired with a clear, achievable action: call this quitline, wear the belt, adopt from a shelter. Shock without a next step can make people look away.

The strongest examples here share three qualities: a single clear idea, a link to the moment where the behaviour happens (a seat, a towel dispenser, a beer glass, a supermarket trolley) and a practical call to action. Whatever cause you care about, those are worth borrowing.

  1. You can even avoid extra cost or even pay less for ads that get higher response than the ones you've been running. Better performance may be possible from smaller ads than you usually buy. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

40 Powerful Social-Issue Ads and the Causes Behind Them
Many people complain about advertisements as an obnoxious way for companies to invade our everyday lives and cram their products down our throats, but that’s not all that advertisements are good for. The advertisements on this list are excellent examples of effective advertising strategies for social issue campaigns that let their voices be heard.
