The body supplies a curved canvas
An illusion tattoo combines marks on the skin with the surface on which they sit. A design can suggest a recess, a raised edge or a second layer by arranging shading and outlines. In the photograph, the body's pose and the light also contribute. The effect belongs to that combination, not to the drawing alone.
This explains why one viewpoint can make an illusion read immediately while another makes its construction more obvious. A still image records a favorable angle; it does not show every way the design looks in movement.
Trace the illusion's visual cues
Identify the line that your eye reads as an edge. Then look for the shadow that makes one area appear to sit above or below another. If you mentally remove that shadow, does the apparent depth weaken? This gives you a specific explanation of the effect without needing to assume that the pictured body has physically changed.
A private pencil exercise on paper can explore the same idea: draw a simple opening, shade one side and add a cast shadow. Change the direction of the imagined light and compare the results. The gallery becomes a route into understanding visual depth rather than simply a collection of images labeled impossible.
