Concern In Russia After Pack Of Blue Dogs Is Spotted Near Abandoned Factory

Concern has been raised after a pack of dogs in Russia appear to have been dyed bright blue. Images of the dogs caught the attention of authorities and it is feared that the dye may be the result of pollution. The images have now been shared widely on Russian social-media, with some saying it is a clear sign that the state does little to protect the natural environment.

The dogs were photographed playing in the snow 370kms from the city of Dzerzhinsk, which lies east of Moscow.

An abandoned factory near which the dogs live is being regarded as a likely source of the pollution, though this remains unverified. The factory was known to produce plexiglass and hydrocyanic acid. Hydrocyanic acid is known to cause a blue tinge to animals that come into contact with it. It can also be extremely dangerous if ingested. There is also the possibility that the dogs have come into contact with copper sulphate, which also has the potential to cause the blue dye. It is commonly used as a fungicide. The suspected chemicals can cause irritation to both the skin and the eyes.

While the dye may have gone onto the dog's fur, there is a real worry that as the dogs lick themselves the dye could enter their bodies and cause severe illness or even death.

Andrey Mislivets, who was involved with the factory before it went into administration 6 years ago, told reporters:

"They could have found some copper sulphate. Stray dogs are wandering around the territory. Possibly they found the remains of some old chemicals and rolled in it, and possibly it was copper sulphate. Several years ago something similar happened when stray dogs got unnatural 'dyes'. They must have found something. No-one controls them."

Authorities in the region are now seeking warrants to investigate the factory and other local businesses to get to the bottom of the mystery. They will also seek to capture the stray dogs in order to evaluate their health.

A spokesperson for the local authority said:

"The dogs are on the territory of a private company. Talks are being held with the chiefs of the enterprise about the possibility of catching the dogs. They must be checked, their health must be assessed, and the reason for their hair dye must be found."
