Wanda Dench and Jamal Hinton: A Thanksgiving Friendship’s Beginning

The early follow-up photographs showed Hinton and Dench sharing later Thanksgivings; the quoted sequence below ends in 2018, two years after the 2016 meeting. The archived account describes Hinton posting another picture together with the caption: “2016, 2017…… 2018,” adding that he promised to post a video he filmed with Dench and her husband on Friday.

The wrong-number exchange supplies the memorable beginning, but the repeated gathering gives the account its depth. A coincidence becomes a relationship through later choices: welcoming a guest, keeping in touch and making another place at the table.

Read the years on the early photographs as dates in that developing story, rather than assuming an old caption reports the latest holiday. The initial exchange remains enjoyable on its own terms. Its enduring appeal is the decision to respond generously once the misunderstanding was clear, not the suggestion that every unexpected message needs to become a friendship.

The tradition outlasted the viral moment. Netflix announced a film based on their story in 2021, and in November 2025 Hinton and Dench marked their tenth Thanksgiving together since the mistaken text of 2016.
