The 2018 feature opened with an account of Muska, a cat reportedly nursing eight orphaned hedgehogs after weaning her kittens. That story belongs to the reporting accompanying the collection; the photographs alone cannot establish every detail of the animals' histories.
The wider gallery gathers adult animals with young, including moments of close contact and shared surroundings.

Closeness takes different forms in the frame
Distance between the subjects changes the picture's emphasis. Close contact may fill the frame, while a wider view allows a young animal's movement and the adult's position to become part of the relationship. These are different photographic moments, not evidence of one universal model of parenthood across species. The collection is strongest when the individual scene retains its own context. Its affectionate presentation can coexist with the fact that animal care and behavior vary, and that a brief image leaves much of the surrounding activity unseen.
A gallery brings together encounters that may have no direct connection beyond the editor's theme. The captions therefore carry an important responsibility: they can identify the species and circumstances without inventing a shared emotional script. The pictures remain varied even when their affectionate presentation encourages a common response.
