A child’s questions about the food on his plate
This little Brazilian boy, Luiz Antonio, is served octopus gnocchi by his mother, and his reaction is very sweet and extremely thought-provoking.
Realizing for the first time that the animal on his plate is the same as the animal that he loves, he has some very intelligent questions for his mum, who bursts into tears at her son’s big heart.
When the video was made
The video was uploaded to YouTube on 15 May 2013, when Luiz Antonio was three years old. He refused to eat the octopus gnocchi served for lunch, explaining that “when we eat animals, they die” and that animals should be looked after, “not eaten”; he liked them “on their feet, happy”. Moved to tears, his mother told him to eat just the rice and potatoes. The Portuguese original was viewed nearly 1.5 million times in two weeks, and an English-subtitled version published on 29 May 2013 passed 900,000 views within three days.
