Bananas are pretty awesome when you think about it. They can be used as an ingredient for many different smoothies, can add a nice touch to a delicious baked meal, or they can just simply be grabbed and taken on the go. According to one report, over 96% of U.S. households purchase bananas at least once a month! We love our bananas, and with good reason.
By simply eating three bananas per day we gain about 1500mg of potassium, and a plethora of health benefits, including these five:
1. Bananas lower high blood pressure – Three bananas a day has been shown to lower blood pressure significantly. The high potassium-to-sodium ratio helps neutralize the effect sodium has on your diet. So maybe grab a banana next time instead of a bag of chips.
2. Bananas improve cardiovascular health – A high fiber diet is good for your heart, and wouldn’t you know it, bananas have a ton of fiber. For added measure, the specific soluble fiber present in bananas are associated with decreased risk of heart disease.
3. Bananas lift your mood and help you feel happy – Your average banana has about 27mg of magnesium, a mineral that helps boost your mood and can also act as a sleep aid. If you’re low on magnesium you might suffer from anxiety, irritability, depression and other disorders.
4. Bananas improve GI tract health – Because bananas are so easy to digest, they are considered non-irritating to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Not only are the easy to digest, but they actually sooth the tract, helping to restore lost minerals after bouts of diarrhea.
5. Bananas improve athletic performance – Athletes everywhere can often be seen with a banana before or after performing. Bananas boost the muscles by providing antioxidants and other nutrients. A study recently done at the Appalachian State University’s Human Performance Lab showed that eating a banana every 15 minutes during their timed cycling trial test was just as effective as drinking a carbohydrate-filled sports drink every 15 minutes.
