Through his portrayal in Plato's dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics, and it is this Platonic Socrates who lends his name to the concepts of Socratic irony and the Socratic method, or elenchus. The latter remains a commonly used tool in a wide range of discussions, and is a type of pedagogy in which a series of questions is asked not only to draw individual answers, but also to encourage fundamental insight into the issue at hand. Plato's Socrates also made important and lasting contributions to the field of epistemology, and the influence of his ideas and approach remains a strong foundation for much western philosophy that followed.

Let us remember his wisdom by reading 24 famous quotes of his:

Your mind is your predicament. It wants to be free of change. Free of pain, free of the obligations of life and death. But change is law and no amount of pretending will alter that reality.”

10) “Sometimes you put walls up not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to break them down.”

  1. If you look into his military background he was also quite the badass, even the day he died he had no fear. Great man, ahead of his time.

  3. The "I am not Athenian…." quote is attributed to Diogenes the cynical (of Sinope). It is highly unlikely that Socrates that died in alignment with his Athenian citizenship and laws, had said that.

  4. Surely, the "I am not Athenian" quote, as Iasonas rightly states, was not Socratic! Do not believe everything that you see posted in the Internet guys! Apart from not having written anything himself, as all we know of him has come down to us through Plato's works, Socrates never said any such thing, as he not only believed in his Athenian Citizenry, but he also died true to it after his Trial. He was given the choice to either live in exile or to take the hemlock. He chose the latter, stating that he wanted to die as an Athenian citizen. Having said that, Ι highly recommend that those who feel themselves to be "citizens of the world" visit the areas controlled by the Islamic State to openly practice their "citizen" rights.... And something else: Plato uses Socrates in his dialogues to promote citizenship in his exclusive City State model of his renowned work The Republic; hardly a cosmopolitan environment. Being well-informed and educated on these issues requires hard work and erudite study through the original sources! The "world citizen" thing is insidiously being peddled here and there to serve other purposes....

  6. Complete nonsense! None of these are actual quotes according to Plato, & many are ideas that belong to others.

These Sites that dedicate themselves to creating content for people who want to sound deep, on Facebook, are shameless.
