The incoming Mayor of New York has once again stated his belief that cryptocurrency and blockchain should be taught in the city's schools as an official part of the curriculum.
Eric Adams, who has been elected Mayor but is yet to take his position officially, made the statement while talking to CNN's 'State of the Union' television program. He said:
"Cryptocurrency is a new way for paying for goods and services, We must open our schools to teach the technology, to teach this new way of thinking when it comes down to paying for goods and services."
When asked about whether he would encourage cryptocurrency use in New York, he said:
"We'll take a look at it, and we'll proceed with caution. We're going to get it properly this time."
Adding that he believed the city must stay ahead in terms of innovation and emerging technologies.
Adams himself has already stated the intention that his first 3 pay-checks as mayor should be in the form of Bitcoin. While this is not allowed, Adams says he will immediately convert the cash into Bitcoins. This statement has led some to argue that he is trying to inflate the price of Bitcoin through his statements in order to gain monetarily.
One critic, Harvard economist Jason Furman, described the actions as 'kind of grifty', saying:
"I really like Eric Adams but I don't think his job description is pumping up a crypto-currency that [he] is about to be paid in. It seems kind of grifty."
Part of the new Mayor's election platform included turning New York into the United States' crypto-hub and setting up a crypto-coin exclusively for the city. A similar scheme currently exists in Miami, known as 'MiamiCoin'. Likewise, The Georgia House of Representatives has recently passed a bill that would include the teaching of some elements of crypto-currency in high-schools.
Cryptocurrency has surged in value over the last few years and has made some speculators wildly rich. However, others have stated that it is a highly unstable store of wealth, that it is extremely damaging to the environment, and that it can be used to facilitate fraud and other crimes such as drug trafficking.
