A trip to the Moon, funded by novelty cryptocurrency 'Dogecoin' and organised by cryptocurrency industry leaders, is set to take place next year. The announcement was made by blockchain companies Unizen and decentralized finance incubator ZenX in collaboration with Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC) who will construct the device to be launched. GEC itself will collaborate with SpaceX, the space company owned by PayPal and tesla founder Elon Musk, who himself is heavily involved in cryptocurrencies.
DOGE-1, named after the Dogecoin cyptocurrency will weigh around 40kgs and travel from Earth into lunar orbit from which it will send back information to space command. The launch is expected to take place in the first half of 2022. While many similar 'cubesats' have been launched in the past they have all been sent into Earth's orbit, this will be the first such device to enter the orbit of the Moon.
The companies said in a statement:
"NASA's CAPSTONE was set to be the first cubesat to reach the Moon, but it has been delayed a number of times and has a current launch date of late March 2022. This means that DOGE-1 could be the first cubesat in history to reach the Moon, marking a significant achievement for global spaceflight."
While SpaceX vice president of commercial sales Tom Ochinero added:
"[This] mission will demonstrate the application of cryptocurrency beyond Earth orbit and set the foundation for interplanetary commerce."
It is hoped by Dogecoin holders that the extra publicity from the launch will see their coins increase dramatically in value.
Dogecoin has risen rapidly in popularity over the last year, particularly due to its support and endorsement from Elon Musk, who has tweeted frequently over its merits. The price of the coin has risen from as little as 5 cents per coin in January 2021 to a high of 70 cents per coin in the summer. The price has now stabilised near 25 cents per coin.
