Bruce Willis and Emma Heming renewed their wedding vows on 21 March 2019, exactly ten years after they first married. It was a relaxed family celebration rather than a second wedding: their two young daughters acted as flower girls, his older daughters from his marriage to Demi Moore were there, and Moore herself attended. The news resurfaced widely in early 2021, but the ceremony took place almost two years earlier.
When and how they renewed their vows
Willis had turned 64 two days before the celebration. Heming organised it herself, without a wedding planner, and told Us Weekly it came together quickly. “It wasn’t months of planning. There was no wedding planner. It was just me,” she said.
Renewing on the exact anniversary, 21 March, tied the evening to the original wedding rather than turning it into a separate event, and it meant Willis’s birthday and the anniversary fell in the same week of family celebrations.
She explained that the day was mainly for their daughters, Mabel, then 6, and Evelyn, then 4, who wanted to be part of a family milestone. Heming shared photos and clips from the evening on Instagram, including the post below.

A blended family in one room
What made the renewal stand out was the guest list. Willis has five daughters: Rumer (born 1988), Scout (1991) and Tallulah (1994) with Demi Moore, and Mabel (2012) and Evelyn (2014) with Heming. According to ET Online, Rumer and Scout sang for the guests; it was not clear whether Tallulah attended.
Moore’s presence drew the most attention. Two decades after their divorce, it is still rare for a celebrity’s former spouse to attend an event celebrating his current marriage, let alone to be welcomed as part of it. The pictures Heming posted to her Instagram Story kept the children at the centre.
Heming told Us Weekly that the younger girls adore their older sisters, and that the family planned to move back west to be closer to them.
How Bruce and Emma’s story began
Willis and Heming, a model, had known each other for some time before they became a couple. Willis has said they were friends while both were in other relationships, then went on a single date just before she was due to move back to New York, and quickly fell in love. Reflecting on it, he said that when you imagine finding the love of your life, “you seldom think it’s someone you already know.”
By then Willis was long established as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, thanks to the Die Hard films, Pulp Fiction and The Sixth Sense, and he was considerably older than Heming. The age gap attracted gossip at the time, but the marriage has outlasted most predictions.
They married on 21 March 2009 in Turks and Caicos. Because that ceremony was not legally binding, they held a short civil ceremony in Beverly Hills six days later. Demi Moore was a guest at the first wedding too.
Demi Moore and an unusual friendship
Willis and Moore married in 1987 and divorced in 2000. Rather than fading from each other’s lives, they built a close co-parenting relationship that later expanded to include Heming. Heming has spoken warmly of Moore welcoming her into the family, and of how much she learned from the way the former couple put their children first after the divorce. Asked about Moore’s presence at the renewal, she said simply: “I wouldn’t do it without her.”

That closeness has been visible for years in family photos, holidays and shared birthdays, and it later became central to how the family handled Willis’s illness.
Why couples renew their vows
A vow renewal has no legal meaning; the marriage already exists. Couples usually choose one to mark a milestone anniversary, to include children who were not born at the original wedding, or to recommit after a difficult period. Unlike weddings, renewals are often small, informal and organised by the couple themselves, much like this one.
Ten years is a common moment to do it. It is long enough to have weathered real changes, such as children, moves and career shifts, and short enough that most of the original guests are still around to celebrate. Some couples rewrite their vows to reflect what they have learned; others simply repeat the originals in front of the children who were not there the first time.
If you are planning one, the same principles apply: keep the focus on the people who matter to you, let children take part in a meaningful way, and do not feel obliged to recreate a full wedding.

What came next for the family
The renewal now reads differently in light of later events. In March 2022 the family announced that Willis was stepping away from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that affects language. In February 2023 they shared that his diagnosis had been updated to frontotemporal dementia. Heming has since become a public voice for dementia caregivers, and Moore and the older daughters have stood alongside her. In 2025 Heming said Willis was living in a separate, single-storey home better suited to his care, close to the family.
The 2019 celebration, with an ex-wife among the guests and five sisters together, remains one of the clearest pictures of the family the couple built.
