The Five Hard Truths About Life

Life is hard, sometimes it can be very hard as many of us right now will be realising. However, there are some ways we can tackle the difficult situations in our life and help us manage the tough times in ways that make us happier, more helpful, and more productive.

When we realise these 5 hard truths, and accept them, things will be become that little bit easier, so just think about these for a while and see what conclusions you come to.

The 5 hard truths

Not everything is under our control

That’s right, as hard as it is to accept, not everything is under our own control. In fact, a huge amount of our life is out of our control. Family, relationships, and our economic situation can all be helped through our own actions, but ultimately these can be affected by the decisions of others.

Realising the difference between what we can control and what we can’t will help us make more positive decisions. What is the point of being angry or upset over something you can’t control yourself? Relax.

Stop having unrealistic expectations

When we have unrealistic expectations of outcomes of our own ambitions or unrealistic expectations of others there can be serious negative consequences. Ambition is great, and trust is great, but if we simply believe these things will happen regardless, then we are putting ourselves in for great let downs.

Instead, realise others and yourself are not perfect and that success takes time and dedication.

Everyone is flawed

Everyone, including you is imperfect, constantly striving for perfection in ourselves means we often get fixated on one thing and completely fail to make progress. It is better to do a good job and get it complete than it is to do a perfect job that never finishes.

When we realise that we are imperfect, we can become far more forgiving and understanding of others – remember the proverb – ‘he who is without sin cast the first stone’.

Busy doesn’t equal productive

We can be busy all day, whether that is working, picking up groceries or cleaning our home, but what we have to realise is that just doing things continually isn’t necessarily advancing us forward. The best way to use your time is to do highly productive laser-focused tasks that allow you to advance towards some larger goal. Don’t get caught in the busy humdrum of life.

Free yourself from constant wants

If you want to be happy you have to stop thinking along the lines of ‘I’ll be happy after X happens’, because once X happens you will no doubt feel happiness for a short time and then revert back to your old ways of unhappiness. You must realise that happiness is not totally dependent on circumstance. Choose to be happy now and at the same time say ‘I would like to achieve this or that, but my happiness doesn’t depend on it’.

As John Lennon said: ‘Life is what happens when you are busy making plans for it’

Take your time to think about these points and apply them to your life and you will see changes for the better!
