Vets generally treat a dog as senior once it reaches roughly the last quarter of its expected lifespan. The American Veterinary Medical Association puts that at about 8 to 11 years for small breeds, 8 to 10 for medium dogs, 8 to 9 for large dogs and as early as 6 or 7 for giant breeds. Many of the dogs here are far beyond those ages, which says a lot about the care they get at home.

- Adapt the home. Ramps, non-slip rugs, orthopaedic beds and raised bowls make daily life easier.
- Notice changes. Confusion, wandering at night, accidents indoors, stiffness or reluctance to climb stairs can point to pain, cognitive decline or other treatable problems.
