20 Hilarious Photos of Silly Dogs and the Science Behind Them

20 Hilarious Pictures of the Silliest but Cutest Dogs

Dogs do not plan to be funny. They misjudge doorways, chase water they cannot catch and make friends with objects that will never love them back, and they do all of it with total sincerity. That is exactly why photos of goofy dogs are so popular: there is no malice in the mischief, only a curious animal working things out in its own slightly baffling way.

This collection gathers 20 of our favourite silly-dog moments shared by owners on Reddit, YouTube and Instagram, each credited to the person who posted it. Alongside the laughs, we have added a little context on why dogs behave the way they do, drawing on what animal-behaviour research actually says. Dogs see the world mainly through their noses and ears, which explains a surprising amount of the confusion below, from barking at mirrors to stopping dead at open doors.

One photo near the end comes with a serious safety note, because cannabis edibles are a real and growing poisoning risk for pets. Otherwise, scroll on and enjoy some of the most lovable clowns in the animal kingdom.

Doors, roofs and the great outdoors

Doorways are a recurring source of comedy for dogs. Many learn routines rather than rules, so a door that is usually closed can stay "closed" in a dog's mind even when it is wide open.

The invisible terrace door

Dog Thinks Terrace Door Is Closed

A small terrier trots up to an open terrace door and stops, as if a pane of glass were still in the way, while its owner tosses a ball back and forth to test the theory. The pup has clearly learned that this spot is a barrier and trusts the habit over the evidence. Dogs rely heavily on learned routines, so a changed environment can take a moment to register.

The runaway who came home first

My Dog Ran Away, After Hours Of Looking I Came Home To This

After hours of anxious searching, one owner returned to find the escapee standing on its hind legs at the front door, waiting to be let in. Many lost dogs do find their way back, usually by following familiar scents and routes. Microchips and an ID tag on the collar remain the best insurance for the ones that do not.

Rooftop rescue

20 Hilarious Pictures of the Silliest but Cutest Dogs

This dog managed to open an upstairs screen door and followed the family cat out onto the roof, then realised that cats are far better at heights than dogs. The photo shows the owner sitting with him on the shingles, giving the reassurance he needed before he would go back inside. If your own dog ever ends up somewhere high, keep calm and approach slowly so it does not panic and jump.

Waiting at the fence

Came Home To Find My Dog Waiting Like This

A black dog sits patiently behind a wire panel in the garden while a bright tennis ball lies just out of reach in the gravel. The owner came home to this scene, and the dog's expression suggests it has been waiting quite a while for someone to fix the situation. It is a neat reminder that dogs often prefer to ask for help rather than solve a problem themselves.

Diesel and the box

English Bulldog Diesel - The Box Lover

Diesel, an English bulldog, wanders along the side of a house with a cardboard box over his head, apparently quite happy with the arrangement. Bulldogs are known for being stubborn and playful, and many owners say their dogs love boxes as much as any cat does. Supervise this sort of game, since a dog that cannot see can easily bump into things.

Water, sprinklers and swimming pools

Water fascinates many dogs. Some breeds were developed to retrieve from lakes and rivers, while others simply cannot resist anything that moves and splashes.

A husky's poolside regret

I Regret Everything

In four frames, a husky edges onto a pool step, leans too far and ends up taking an unplanned swim. The last shot says it all. Huskies were bred to pull sleds in cold climates rather than to swim, and if your dog uses a pool, a ramp or shallow step it can find easily is an important safety feature.

Cartwheels on the beach

Hey, Guys, Me Too!

Two people turn cartwheels at the water's edge, and a husky on a lead decides to join in, with spectacularly clumsy results. Dogs are social animals and love to join whatever their people are doing, even when they have no idea what that is. This one clearly needs a little more practice.

The pug versus the watering can

Friend Of A Friend's Pooch Dragged The Sprinkler In Through The Doggy Door

A pug stares in puzzlement at a stream of water trickling from above into a green watering can, unsure whether to drink it, chase it or bark at it. The confusion is understandable: dogs have relatively poor detail vision compared with humans, so a thin moving stream can look mysterious. Patience eventually won out.

The sprinkler that came indoors

Water Can Be Tricky

A friend's dog decided the garden sprinkler belonged inside and dragged it in through the dog flap, still running. The result was a soaked tiled floor and a dog looking very pleased with itself. If your dog chews or carries garden equipment, check hoses and fittings regularly for damage.

Toys, friends and imaginary playmates

Dogs are deeply social, and their urge to play sometimes lands on the wrong target, from a reflection to a building brick.

Sharing toys with the mirror dog

She Brought All Her Toys Over So The Mirror Doggy Could Play With Them

This young dog carried her toys over to a full-length mirror so the "other dog" could play too. Dogs generally fail the classic visual mirror test, treating their reflection as a stranger or ignoring it. In 2017, however, psychologist Alexandra Horowitz found that dogs can recognise their own scent, which suggests they recognise themselves by smell rather than sight.

A puppy and his favourite brick

His Best Friend Is A Brick

Four photos show a golden puppy carrying, cuddling and sleeping beside an ordinary house brick. Puppies often bond with odd objects while they are teething and exploring with their mouths. Hard, rough items can damage young teeth, though, so swapping in a puppy-safe chew toy is a good idea.

Ball out, potato in

She's A Retriever, Not A Genius

Her owner threw a ball, and this chocolate retriever proudly brought back a potato instead. Retrievers are bred to pick up and carry things gently, and that instinct does not always come with good judgement about what to fetch. Raw potato is best kept away from dogs, so trading it back for the ball was the right call.

Queueing for a treat

He Thinks He Needs To Wait In Line To Get A Treat

A dog waits at the end of a long line of stuffed toys, apparently convinced it has to queue for its turn at the treat. It is a funny illusion, but dogs do pick up on routine and order, which is one reason training works best when rules stay consistent.

Masters of disguise and very odd poses

Some dogs are not doing anything wrong at all. They simply look ridiculous, and their owners were quick enough to grab a camera.

A seal on the bathroom mat

Found A Loose Seal In My Bathroom

Wrapped snugly in a grey blanket with only her snout poking out, this dog looks remarkably like a seal hauled out on the bathroom floor. Many dogs love burrowing under blankets because it is warm and feels safe. A leftover denning instinct is often suggested as the reason.

Green from the lawn mowing

It's Not Easy To Tell, But One Of My Dogs Helped Mow The Lawn

One of these two dogs "helped" mow the lawn, and it is not hard to work out which. The fluffy face is dyed bright green with grass clippings. Fresh clippings are harmless on fur, but keep dogs away from lawns recently treated with fertiliser or weedkiller.

The chicken-leg nap

Cuttie Chicken Legs

This little dog sleeps flat on the sofa cushion with its back legs stretched straight out behind, a position owners often call the "frog" or "splooting" pose. Short-legged breeds do it a lot, and it is usually just a comfortable way to cool the belly. Sudden reluctance to lie normally is worth mentioning to a vet.

Staring at the wall

Sugerbooger Isn't The Brightest, But She Makes My Job So Much More Entertaining

A golden retriever nicknamed Sugarbooger sits staring intently into the corner of a hallway, while her owner tries to get her attention. Dogs often fixate on sounds or smells we cannot detect, such as a mouse behind a wall. If an older dog starts staring at walls often, though, it is worth mentioning to a vet.

Dogs versus cats (and each other)

A household with more than one pet produces endless comedy, especially when the dog is several steps behind.

Where did the cat go?

Where Is The Cat?

The dog stands in a doorway looking around for the cat, while the cat is clinging to the top of the door right above his head. Cats are natural climbers and love high vantage points, so the safest place to escape a curious dog is often straight up. The dog never thought to look.

Two huskies, two theories

One Is Smarter Than The Other

Two huskies keep watch in a bedroom, one fixated on the window and the other apparently watching something quite different. The owner's verdict was that one of the pair is noticeably smarter than the other. Huskies are famously independent thinkers, which can look like brilliance one moment and confusion the next.

A serious note: the dog that ate a cannabis brownie

My Friend's Dog Ate A Pot Brownie Yesterday

This chihuahua, photographed on a vet's examination table with eyes half-closed and a dreamy grin, had eaten a cannabis brownie the day before. It looks funny, but THC poisoning in dogs is a real emergency. Vets report rising numbers of cases where cannabis is legal, and edibles are the most common source.

Signs can include wobbliness, dribbling urine, dilated pupils, a slow heart rate and an exaggerated reaction to touch or sound. Large doses can cause seizures. Brownies add a second danger, because chocolate itself is toxic to dogs, and some edibles contain the sweetener xylitol, which is dangerous even in tiny amounts. If your dog eats an edible, contact a vet or an animal poison helpline straight away and be honest about what it ate so it can be treated properly.

Why goofy dogs make us happier

Part of the appeal of photos like these is that dogs give us an uncomplicated kind of joy. They do not hold grudges, they commit fully to every bad idea, and they forgive us instantly for laughing. Watching them reminds us that curiosity is supposed to be messy.

If your own dog has a habit of doing daft things, keep a camera handy, keep the house safe for its explorations and keep treats out of reach. Most of all, enjoy the clowning. A slightly foolish dog is often a happy, confident one.
