21 Charming Dog Pictures That Made Us Smile Instantly

Few things lift a bad mood as quickly as a good dog photo. A husky bouncing off a wall, a puppy asleep across a keyboard, two dogs frozen in total concentration because someone just touched a tennis ball: these are tiny moments, but they make people smile almost automatically. There is some science behind that reaction, too. Studies of the bond between people and dogs have found that both species release oxytocin, a hormone linked to trust and attachment, when they spend time together, and dogs can tell a smiling human face from a neutral one.

The 21 photos below were shared by their owners on Reddit and Imgur, where communities such as r/aww collect everyday pet moments. We have grouped them by theme and added a short note to each on what the dog is probably doing and why. At the end you will find a few reasons dogs are so good for us, and some simple safety points that a couple of these pictures bring to mind.

Dogs with very strong opinions

1. The farm dog who insists on sitting on the cat

“She has a whole farm where she can sit anywhere, yet she chooses to sit on the cat time and time again.”

Photo: Lobbyse/reddit

A whole farm to choose from, and this little terrier picks the cat as a seat, again and again according to her owner. The cat looks remarkably patient about it. Dogs and cats raised together often develop odd but stable friendships, with rules only they understand.

5. Shh, there is a squirrel

“SHHHHHH... A squirrel...”

Photo: Macho-Grande/reddit

A wiry terrier presses a paw over its owner's face as he lies on the floor, as if ordering silence while it watches something outside. Terriers were bred to hunt small animals, so squirrels are serious business. The paw, of course, is more likely a bid for attention.

12. A shoe for every homecoming

“My dog always brings me a shoe whenever I get home.”

Photo: wibze/reddit

This fluffy white dog greets its owner with a shoe in its mouth every time they come home. Writing for the American Kennel Club, veterinary behaviourist Dr Nicholas Dodman suggests two likely reasons: a natural urge to grab and carry things, and a learned habit, since bringing an object gets attention and keeps the "game" going.

14. Not even slightly sorry

He doesn’t look like he feels guilty.

Photo: anonymouspipline/reddit

Surrounded by the stuffing of a shredded cushion, this young dog sits calmly and looks straight at the camera. What people call a "guilty look" is often a reaction to the owner's tone and body language rather than true guilt. Chewing usually points to boredom or teething, and more exercise and chew toys help.

Athletes and adventurers

2. Husky parkour

Husky Parkour

Photo: Houseofcards32/reddit

Caught mid-leap, a husky kicks off a brick wall like a free runner, ears up and mouth open. Huskies were bred to pull sleds over long distances, so they have huge reserves of energy. Without enough exercise, many find their own entertainment, not always where owners would like.

6. Ashe takes the instruction to "sit on the log" loosely

“Told my dog, Ashe, to sit on the log and this is what I got.”

Photo: redsoxfan1001/reddit

Asked to sit on a log for a photo, Ashe climbed onto the far end of a huge bleached tree trunk by a mountain lake, ball in mouth, and posed there instead. Technically, she followed the order. The scenery makes it one of the most striking pictures in the set.

10. No fence can hold him

“No cage can hold me!”

Photo: Calcd_Uncertainty/reddit

A German shepherd squeezes its head through a gap in a wooden fence to look into the neighbour's garden, while a fluffy dog in a bandana watches from the other side. Fence gaps are a classic escape route, so it is worth checking boundaries regularly, especially with curious young dogs.

18. Ten seconds after "no swimming"

“10 seconds after I explained that they weren’t allowed in the water”

Photo: Shortsleevedwarrior/reddit

Two golden retrievers stand soaking wet in the water, grinning, moments after being told they were not allowed in. Retrievers were bred to fetch game from lakes and marshes, and many have water-resistant coats and a deep love of swimming. Rules about water rarely stand a chance.

21. A new pack at the dog park

“My puppy made some new friends at the dog park today.”

Photo: GallifreyanHusky/reddit

A husky puppy poses with a group of grown huskies it met at the park, all of them looking straight at the camera. Supervised play with friendly, vaccinated dogs is an important part of puppy socialisation, helping young dogs learn manners and confidence.

Sleepy puppies and quiet moments

3. A puppy asleep on the office desk

“My co-worker’s puppy fell asleep on her desk. Not much work got done that day.”

Photo: alexacoh/imgur

A co-worker's tiny, pale puppy fell asleep belly-up beside a keyboard, and according to the poster very little work was done that day. Young puppies sleep for a large part of the day, which they need for growth and development. This is also the photo used to preview the whole collection.

7. Hide and seek in the garden

“I looked outside and he wasn’t there. It took me a minute to find him.”

Photo: Veered/reddit

Its owner looked into the garden, saw no dog, and only after a minute spotted this German shepherd puppy lying among the shrubs with its paws over the edge of a flower bed. The tan and black coat blends well into shade and bark, so the camouflage is surprisingly good.

11. The perfect place to rest

A great place to rest

Photo: icanhazpbr/reddit

A grey and white dog lies in the middle of a bed of broad-leaved plants, tongue out and clearly delighted with itself. Cool, shady leaves are a natural place to rest on a warm day. Some garden plants are toxic to dogs, so it is worth checking what grows where your pet likes to lie.

19. Asleep in the food bowl

“Brought this guy home last night, this is how he fell asleep.”

Photo: Ooohmydingdingdong/reddit

A German shepherd puppy brought home the night before nodded off with its face in a bowl of kibble. New puppies tire quickly, and the first days in a new home are exciting and exhausting. Plenty of rest and a quiet corner help them settle.

20. "My sister's child"

“My sister’s child”

Photo: NainTestin/reddit

The poster's sister cradles her young shepherd-type dog in her arms in the front seat of a car, exactly like a baby. Many people now describe their dogs as family members, and research on dog ownership has linked it to lower stress responses and more physical activity.

Ball-obsessed and food-focused

4. Sammy and her favourite ball

Her name is Sammy, and she really loves this ball

Photo: Thalilalala/reddit

Sammy, a golden retriever, holds a tennis ball with her tongue lolling out of the side of her mouth and a look of pure joy. Fetch taps directly into the retrieving instinct the breed was developed for, which is why some goldens will play it for hours.

8. Still loves his ball

“My good boy still enjoys his ball.”

Photo: Duh_Vid/reddit

This broad-faced dog sits proudly beside a battered, half-deflated football, still clearly his favourite toy. Dogs often bond with a particular toy, and it does not matter how worn it looks. Check old toys for loose pieces that could be swallowed.

15. The faces just before the tennis ball appears

“Their faces right before I get the tennis ball out...”

Photo: Gs1000g/reddit

A Rottweiler and an Australian shepherd stare up at their owner with total focus, because they know the tennis ball is coming. Dogs read human cues closely, from where we reach to how we move, and they often predict games before we start them.

16. "Can we buy them all?"

“Can we buy them all?”

Photo: Roush14/reddit

A happy black dog stands in a pet shop in front of a wall of rawhide bones, eyes bright. Rawhide chews can be a choking or digestive risk for some dogs, so ask your vet which chews suit your dog's size and habits.

Messy, mischievous and curious

9. A new friend from the morning walk

“Someone made a new friend on our walk this morning!”

Photo: gambino13/reddit

The poster's dog met a small pug on its morning walk, and here the newcomer peers out through a wire pen. Short-nosed breeds like pugs can struggle to breathe in heat or after hard play, so their owners keep walks gentle on warm days.

13. A dog, or a bat?

Is this a dog or a bat?

Photo: sonnyjbiskit/reddit

This black puppy has ears so large and upright that it looks like a little bat sitting among its toys. Puppies often grow into their ears, and in many breeds the ears stand fully only after a few months.

17. Before and after the charcoal bag

“Played with the charcoal bag, and I don’t regret it.”

Photo: xsuperbz/reddit

On the left, a clean white puppy. On the right, the same puppy after a happy session with a bag of barbecue charcoal, now completely grey. The owner says the dog has no regrets. Keep charcoal, lighter fluid and fire starters out of reach, and call a vet if your dog may have swallowed any.

Why dog photos make us feel better

Looking at dogs is pleasant, but living with them may also be good for us. Research summarised on Wikipedia's page about the human–canine bond includes studies showing that pet ownership softened blood pressure responses to mental stress, that a companion animal reduced distress in children during a medical exam, and that people living with pets tended to be more active. Dogs, for their part, can distinguish a smiling face from a blank one, and both dogs and their owners release oxytocin during time together.

A few quick reminders for anyone thinking of adding a dog to the family:

  • Match the breed to your life. Huskies and retrievers need lots of exercise; a tired dog is usually a well-behaved one.
  • Puppy-proof early. Cushions, shoes and charcoal bags are all fair game to a curious young dog.
  • Socialise gently. Positive meetings with people and other dogs build confidence.
  • Talk to a vet. Ask about vaccinations, safe chews and anything that worries you about your dog's health.

And if you just needed a smile today, scroll back up to the two dogs waiting for that tennis ball.
