Guy Who Set The World Record At The Age Of 14, Now Aims To Clean The Ocean Of Plastic

Boyan Slat, a 23-year-old Dutch inventor, and entrepreneur started building engineering projects since at the age of two and first truly impressed the globe by securing a Guinness World Record when he was 14 when he launched 213 water rockets simultaneously. Slat is aiming for a much greater goal now — cleaning the ocean of plastic.

In 2011, while he was diving in Greece, Boyan noticed there was more plastic in the water than fish. He then decided to devote all his time to try and clean the ocean of plastic pollution. He even dropped his studies for that purpose. Two years later Slat founded The Ocean Cleanup and introduced his idea to use the natural water currents in a TEDx talk. He first set out to test this system in Japan, but later decided to focus on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, setting an ambitious goal to clean half of the plastic waste in five years.

The Ocean Cleanup develops technology which would help clean the ocean of the plastic waste. After raising more than $2.2 million, the organization launched huge research in 2014. The researchers studied the Great Pacific Garbage Patch so that they prepare themselves for the full-scale deployment in 2020. Using the data acquired, they also developed technology and planned to launch the first cleanup system within mid-2018.

Using the research data, The Ocean Cleanup created a passive floating device that collects plastic.

It uses the ocean currents to do all of the work, while the device floats freely and collects waste.

The anchor keeps the installation at the needed level, as well as allows it to move slower than the plastic.

Then, the concentrated plastic can be extracted and shipped to shore for recycling.
