Everyone has days when one small thing goes wrong and then everything else follows. The 26 photos below catch those moments at their worst: a sandwich and a drink both trapped in a vending machine, an ice cream that hit the pavement after one lick, a dryer in flames, a guitar split down the middle and a whole parking lot that somehow defeated one driver. Most were posted by the people they happened to, on Reddit, Imgur, Twitter and the Russian site Pikabu, and they became popular because nearly everyone has been there.
We have grouped the photos by where the trouble struck: food, home, work, the road and holidays. Each comes with a short note on what went wrong and, where it helps, a practical tip that might save you from the same fate. Credits to the original posters follow each picture. Nobody in these photos was seriously hurt as far as we know, so it is fine to laugh, kindly.
Food that never made it
The cake that stuck to the lid

A beautiful chocolate cake arrives sliced and dusted with cocoa, but every cream rosette from the top is now stuck to the inside of the box lid. A slightly taller box, or a few cocktail sticks to hold the lid up, would have saved the decoration. Bakers often use cake collars or tall boxes for exactly this reason.
A sandwich and a drink, both stuck
When the sandwich jammed, its owner paid for a bottle, hoping it would fall and knock the sandwich free. Instead the bottle jammed too. Whatever you do, never rock or tip a vending machine to free a snack: these machines weigh hundreds of kilos and have crushed people who tried. Report the jam to the owner and ask for a refund.
One lick of ice cream
The first picture shows a towering soft-serve cone, almost too tall to be real. The second shows the cone, now empty, with the whole swirl on the paving stones. Very tall soft-serve is top-heavy, so a cup or a smaller swirl is the safer choice if you plan to walk while eating.
A morning of baking on the ground
A baker spent the morning filling crates with breads, muffins and pastries for an order. Then the stack tipped over in the street and spilled the lot. The original poster said a message from the boss arrived just after; whatever it said, the timing could hardly have been worse.
Breakfast with too much pepper
A fried egg sits in the pan under a thick black blanket of ground pepper: the shaker's lid came off at the worst moment. Scraping off the top layer may rescue it, but most people would just start again. Checking the lid before you shake is the cheapest kitchen habit there is.
Pizza left in the car
The poster left a pizza in the car with the window open and came back to find a large chunk gone. The likely culprits are birds or a neighbourhood animal, both quick to spot an easy meal. Closing the window, or taking the food with you, is the obvious lesson.
Disasters at home
Doing the laundry, with flames
A clothes dryer is on fire, flames pouring from its open door. Dryer fires are more common than many people think, and fire services say the leading cause is a build-up of lint. Clean the lint filter every load, keep the vent duct clear, and never leave a dryer running when you go out or go to bed.
Ice water on a glass table
A friend put a glass of ice water on a black glass table on a scorching day, and the whole top shattered into small pieces. Tempered glass is made to break into small granules instead of sharp shards, which is safer, but it can fail all at once. Thermal stress, an old chip on the edge or a tiny impurity in the glass can all trigger it.
Dad's guitar
A classical guitar lies on the carpet with its top split along the grain. The poster said it was their father's 800-dollar instrument. Guitars are sensitive to knocks and to very dry air, which can make the thin wooden top crack; a good luthier can often repair a split like this, so it is not always the end.
Washing a pillow
The washing machine is full of loose blue foam crumbs: the pillow's cover gave way and the filling escaped. Shredded-foam pillows are often not meant for machine washing. Check the care label, and if washing is allowed, put the pillow inside a zipped protective cover first.
Stuck on the roof
The view from the roof says it all: the ladder has slipped and now lies across the deck below. Ladders should be set at a safe angle, tied off or held at the base, and it is wise not to work at height alone. A phone in your pocket helps too.
Water at the front door
A suburban house sits in floodwater with snow still on the ground nearby, a sign of a spring melt or a heavy thaw. In many countries, including the United States, standard home insurance does not cover flood damage, so homeowners in low-lying areas should check whether they need separate flood cover.
Bad days at work and school
A slammed glass door
Someone left a shop in a hurry, and the tall glass door crazed into a sheet of cracks from top to bottom. It stayed in its frame because safety glass is designed to hold together or crumble rather than fall in large blades. Whoever slammed it probably had a very expensive afternoon.
A collapsed supermarket shelf
A shelf full of jars has come down in a supermarket aisle, leaving staff to deal with a floor full of broken glass and sticky sauce. Overloaded or badly fitted shelving is a known hazard in retail, and new staff are usually taught to stack heavy goods low for exactly this reason.
Hair caught in a money counter
A bank worker leans over a note-counting machine with her hair pulled into it while a colleague tries to free her. It looks funny, but entanglement in rollers can cause real injury. Anyone with long hair who works near machines with rollers or belts should tie it back.
Firefighters to the rescue
Several firefighters gather around a young woman pressed against the gap by a glass door at a station shelter. She appears to be stuck, and nobody quite knows how it happened. Emergency services free people from railings, doors and gaps more often than you might think, and calling them is better than forcing it.
A shattered office
Someone arrived at work to find the glass wall of their office in pieces across the carpet. Large glass partitions can break spontaneously, sometimes because of a tiny nickel sulphide impurity in tempered glass that expands over the years. Whatever the cause, it was not the start to the week anyone wants.
Lost in the yearbook
The senior class photo fills two pages, and the arrow labelled "me" points straight into the fold of the binding. The student's face disappeared into the gutter of the book. Designers usually keep faces away from the centre of a spread, but on a crowded group photo, someone has to be in the middle.
Trouble on the road
When a hearse door fails
Photographed in Drogheda, Ireland, a coffin has slid out of the back of a hearse onto the road while the driver hurries to it. The photo was shared online with the dark joke that bad luck can follow you even after death. It is a reminder that even the most careful professions have off days.
The handle came off
The driver pulled the door handle and it came away in their hand, leaving a hole in the door. On many cars the outer handle is a plastic part clipped to a metal rod, and cold weather or age can make it brittle. A replacement is usually inexpensive, but getting into the car that morning was another matter.
A chain of crashed cars
Several cars sit nose-to-tail on a Russian street, each one dented into the next. Chain collisions like this happen when drivers follow too closely and one brakes hard. Keeping at least a two-second gap, longer on wet or icy roads, gives you time to stop.
A boulder on the roof
Seen from above, a small car parked by the road has a huge rock sitting on its crushed roof. The poster on Pikabu joked that giving a friend's stone a lift was a bad idea; how it really got there is not clear, but it may have fallen from a truck or a building site. Parking away from loading areas is the practical lesson.
One car, one huge empty parking lot
The lot is almost completely empty, yet one car sits at an odd angle across the painted lines, far from any marked space. The photo became popular as an example of parking that takes real talent to get wrong.
A truck stuck across the road

A long articulated truck has tried to turn where there is a no-U-turn sign and is now blocking the road in both directions. The person taking the photo is stuck behind it. Long trailers need far more space to turn than drivers expect, which is why such signs exist.
Holidays gone wrong
A hotel's accessible toilet
In what was described as a four-star hotel, the accessible toilet has been used to store mops, buckets and a cleaning trolley, blocking the very space a wheelchair user needs. Accessible toilets need clear floor space for turning and transferring, grab bars and reachable controls. Using them as storage is a common complaint from disabled travellers, and it is easy to fix.
The water slide that took her wig

Two frames from a water slide show a woman sliding down happily, and then, a moment later, her wig continuing on its own path behind her. Strong water flow on slides can pull off wigs, hats and loose swimwear. Securing hair pieces with clips or a swim cap is the usual advice.
Why we love watching bad days
Photos like these spread for a reason. Psychologists describe a kind of "benign violation" in humour: something goes wrong, but no one is badly hurt, so we can laugh. Seeing strangers have worse days than ours is also oddly comforting. It reminds us that everyone burns the toast now and then.
