30 Extremely Intelligent School & University Ideas That Are Worth To Be Copied

The best school ideas are usually simple: a slide instead of a staircase, a vending machine for pens, a stapler fixed to a wall, a periodic table you can actually touch. None of them needs a huge budget, yet each one solves a small daily problem for students or teachers, or makes learning feel a little more alive.

This collection gathers 30 such ideas spotted in schools, colleges and universities, from a university in Munich with giant tube slides to two Japanese kindergartens designed around a tree and a rain puddle. We have grouped them by what they do: getting people moving, building learning into the walls and furniture, keeping supplies within reach, and supporting students' wellbeing. For each one we explain what it is, where it comes from when that is known, and why it is worth copying. Most photos were shared by students and parents on Reddit and Imgur, and they are credited under each image.

Ideas that get students moving

1. Giant slides at the Technical University of Munich

30 Extremely Intelligent School & University Ideas That Will Make You Jealous - Technical University Munich Put Slides In Their Building. I'm Pretty Jealous

The mathematics and informatics building at TUM's Garching campus has two curved steel tube slides that drop from the third floor, about 13 metres up, into the atrium. Called the Parabelrutsche ("parabola slide"), the artwork by the Munich team Brunner / Ritz was opened on 10 December 2002. According to TUM's own page, riders must be at least 11 years old and 1.20 m tall and should sit on a mat, and are asked to keep the noise down for people working nearby.

30 Extremely Intelligent School & University Ideas That Will Make You Jealous - My Daughter's First Grade Classroom Has Desks With Pedals So Kids Can Move While Learning

In this first-grade class, some desks have pedals underneath so children can move their legs while they work. Young children often find it hard to sit still for long periods, and a quiet outlet for movement can help some of them focus. Standing desks, wobble stools and balance cushions serve the same purpose.

8. A periodic table with real samples

30 Extremely Intelligent School & University Ideas That Will Make You Jealous - My School's Periodic Table

23. Bubble wrap for exam stress

30 Extremely Intelligent School & University Ideas That Will Make You Jealous - How My University Is Helping Us Get Over Exam Stress

A box of free bubble wrap with a sign promising "instant exam-stress relief" is a gentle joke, but it also gives anxious students a quick, harmless way to fidget. Many universities run lighter-hearted stress-busting events around exam time alongside formal support services.

28. Drink-testing coasters

30 Extremely Intelligent School & University Ideas That Will Make You Jealous - My University Has Coasters That Can Test Your Drink For Rape Drugs

A university handed out coasters with test spots designed to react to certain drugs used to spike drinks. The coaster also carries an awareness message in memory of a young man. Such kits can raise awareness, but they test for only a few substances, and earlier assessments found pre-drink testing kits unreliable, as noted in Wikipedia's overview of drug-facilitated assault. Alcohol is the substance most often involved, so watching your drink and looking out for friends still matters most.

30 Extremely Intelligent School & University Ideas That Will Make You Jealous - This Japanese Kindergarten Is Built Around A Tree

Fuji Kindergarten in Tachikawa, a city in western Tokyo, is the work of Tezuka Architects. The building in these photos wraps a ring of glass, steel and wood around a roughly 50-year-old zelkova tree, with platforms and low levels that children can climb through. According to Bored Panda, the tree had been badly damaged by a typhoon and later recovered, and the windows face inward so children can always see it.

Ideas any school can borrow

Not every school can afford tube slides or a building wrapped around a tree, but many of these ideas cost very little. A few principles stand out:

  • Solve the small daily frictions. A wall stapler, a supply machine or a calculator on a plank removes interruptions that add up over a year.
  • Let the building teach. Clocks, stairs, doors and lockers are seen every day; turning them into gentle lessons costs only paint and imagination.
  • Make room for movement and play. Lanes on stairs, pedal desks and slides recognise that students are not built to sit still all day.
  • Take wellbeing seriously. Quiet rooms, free sunscreen and calm spaces before exams show students that the school cares about more than grades.
  • Bring nature in. Trees, rain and daylight can be part of the design rather than something kept outside.

If your school has a clever idea like these, it may be worth sharing with others. Good ideas spread fastest when someone takes a photo and says, "Why don't we do this too?"
