Did a Stray Dog Rescue a Newborn in Oman? What We Know

Facebook ↗WhatsApp ↗

In November 2015, photos of a stray dog holding a newborn baby in its mouth spread across Arabic-language social media, with captions saying the dog had saved the abandoned child in Oman. The story is touching, but it has never been confirmed. Fact-checkers could not establish where or when the pictures were taken, whether they were staged, or whether the details of the rescue were true.

Below is what the viral version said, what checking it revealed, the well-documented cases where dogs really did help abandoned babies, and what anyone should do if they ever find a newborn alone.

What the viral story claimed

The version shared in English, credited to the Egyptian news site Al-Masryoon and later to pet blogs, set the scene in a place called Kharbika, Oman. A man out cycling one Saturday morning noticed drops of blood on the road and a stray dog carrying something. Looking closer, he saw a baby boy, apparently only hours old, with the umbilical cord still attached.

Fearing the worst, he ran towards the dog. According to the story, the dog did not resist and let the people who gathered take the baby, almost as if handing him over. The child was said to have been taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors found him unhurt.

A frame from the photos shared in November 2015: a stray dog holding a newborn in its mouth. Where and when it was taken, and what happened next, has never been independently verified.

The post went on to describe a police investigation. Officers supposedly checked hospital records and found no missing babies, and witnesses spoke of a young woman who had come to an emergency room, refused an examination and left. Police were said to suspect she was the mother.

What fact-checkers found

When the photos circulated in November 2015, the fact-checking site Snopes looked into them. Its conclusion was simple: the images could not be verified. The most common version of the story did not even place it in Oman. It pointed to Saudi Arabia and cited the Saudi daily Sada, which itself said it did not know whether the incident had happened in Saudi Arabia or somewhere else. Other posts placed it in different countries.

Snopes also noted that none of the genuine dog-rescue reports from previous years seemed to match these pictures, and that such stories are often paired with unrelated photos. We could not find any statement from Omani police, hospitals or international news agencies about a dog carrying a baby in Kharbika, and we could not confirm that a place by that name exists in Oman.

That does not prove the photos are fake. It means the story should be treated as unconfirmed: a moving picture with an uncertain backstory.

Why would a dog carry a baby?

If the photos are genuine, there are plausible explanations that need no miracle. Mother dogs move their puppies by gripping them gently in their mouths, and a nursing female may react to a crying newborn in a similar way. Several real cases, described below, involved dogs that had puppies of their own.

Other explanations are less comforting. A hungry stray might pick up a baby as it would any other find, and a dog carrying a newborn by the body could easily injure it. People who saw these images understandably wanted to see a heroic animal, but the dog's intentions cannot be read from a photograph. What we can say is that the outcome described, a baby handed over unharmed, would have been fortunate.

Real cases of dogs finding abandoned babies

While the 2015 photos remain unverified, news archives contain several well-reported cases. Snopes listed these in July 2015, while debunking a different picture, a stock photo of a dog and baby that had been passed off as a rescue:

  • Kenya, 2005: a stray nursing dog found a baby girl abandoned near Ngong Forest outside Nairobi and carried her to its puppies, crossing a busy road and a barbed wire fence. The Associated Press reported the story.
  • Argentina, 2008: near La Plata, a dog sheltered a newborn left in a field, keeping the baby beside its own six puppies until a neighbour heard crying. Police believed the dog had moved the baby about 50 metres. CNN covered the case.
  • Ghana, 2012: near Bolgatanga, people searching for a missing farm dog found it under a bridge with a two-week-old baby curled against it.
  • United Kingdom, 2013: in Stechford, Birmingham, an Alsatian named Jade led her owner to a baby girl, believed to be about a day old, hidden in a bag in park bushes.

These cases show that dogs do sometimes find and protect abandoned infants. They also show why it pays to look for a named place, a date and a news report before sharing a dramatic image.

Why newborns are abandoned in the Gulf, and what happens next

The sad core of the story is real, even if this particular case is not confirmed. Babies are found abandoned in Oman and neighbouring countries from time to time. In one case reported by Gulf News, police on patrol in the Amerat area of Muscat found a baby girl, no more than two days old, with her umbilical cord still attached; she was taken to Khoulah hospital in stable condition.

The same report explains part of the reason. Sex outside marriage is illegal in Oman, and some parents abandon babies out of fear of prosecution and shame. Children found this way are cared for at the state-run Al Khoud Child Care Centre. The authorities give them names, birth certificates and citizenship papers, and after investigation many are placed with Omani families for adoption.

Many countries try to prevent dangerous abandonment with confidential birth services or "safe haven" rules, which let a parent leave a newborn at a hospital or fire station without being charged. Where such options exist and are well known, fewer babies are left in the open.

If you ever find an abandoned newborn

It is rare, but knowing the basics can save a life:

  • Call the emergency number straight away and give the exact location.
  • Keep the baby warm. Newborns lose heat fast. Wrap the baby in clean clothing or a blanket, cover the head, and hold the baby against your body if you can.
  • Do not try to feed the baby or cut or tie the umbilical cord. Leave medical care to paramedics and doctors.
  • Note what you saw: the time, the place and anything nearby. Police will need it, and it may help find a mother who also needs medical help.

Whether or not the Oman photos are real, the lesson holds: an abandoned baby needs warmth and professional help within minutes, and a mother who felt she had no choice needs support too.

  1. wow what a cool dog! but this makes me so sick... like "dogs are angels fallen from the sky?" what an incredibly shitty comment and bad bad journalism? there's bad dogs killing children and obviously good dogs, too... that's it. No need for monstrous religious praising of all doggiekind. Go fuck yourself with that.

  4. So now its in the hands of the government which means he will go to CPS. The kid is good as dead. The newborn will end up dead, raped or sacrificed and eaten by some Satanist.
