US military officials have played two videos of UFOs to a committee at the House of Representatives, the first House hearing on UFOs for more than 50 years. The previously classified videos show bizarre objects acting strangely and were captured by US fighter aircraft.
The first video shows a round object floating by an aircraft, while the second video shows two strange triangular shaped objects as seen through night-vision.
Ronald Moultrie, who is the Pentagon's top intelligence official, has said that the US military has not ruled out the possibility that these objects are extra-terrestrials visiting Earth on spacecraft.
He said:
"There are elements of our government engaged in ... looking for extra-terrestrial life. Our goal is not to potentially cover up something, it's to understand what's maybe out there."
However, Scott Bray, the deputy director of naval intelligence, who testified in the House, said there was no evidence currently that the UFOs were linked to alien lifeforms. He said:
"We are all curious and we seek to understand the unknown. And as a lifelong intelligence professional, I'm impatient. I want immediate explanations for this as much as anyone else. However, understanding can take significant time and effort. It's why we've endeavoured to concentrate on this data driven process to derive fact-based results."
The US Congress heard last year that there had been 144 total sightings of UFOs by military personnel over the last 17 years. Only one such sighting has ever had a clear non-alien explanation.
Following the testimony at the House, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby, said:
"We are absolutely committed to being as transparent as we can with the American people and with members of Congress about our perspectives on this and what we're going to try to do to make sure we have a better process for identifying these phenomena, analysing that information in a more proactive, coordinated way than it's been done in the past, and that we also are doing what we need to do to mitigate any safety issues as many of these phenomena have been sighted in training ranges and in training environments."
