It has been revealed that that the Bitcoin billionaire who bought the Beeple NFT artwork for $69.3 million is a man by the name of MetaKovan, a relatively unknown investor originally from Southern India whose real name is Vignesh Sundaresan.
The new media attention has shone a light on MetaKovan's past and how he became a Bitcoin billionaire with an investment of just $5,000. Growing up in relative poverty, he says in a new interview that he couldn't even afford a laptop in his younger days and taught himself to code by borrowing a friend's laptop at night. He would keep all his files in the only thing he could afford, a flash drive.
With an entrepreneurial spirit, he began building various websites, 54 in total, of which almost all were a complete failure. It was then he stumbled upon Bitcoin. It was only eight years ago that MetaKovan invested the entirety of his life savings, that he had accumulated through his work as a freelance software engineer, into Bitcoin.
MetKovan still claims that 99.9% of his wealth is still entrusted in cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Speaking in an interview about the purchase of the NFT artwork to CNBC, MetaKovan said:
"This NFT is a significant piece of art history. Sometimes these things take some time for everyone to recognize and realize. I'm OK with that. I had the opportunity to be part of this very important shift in hoNFTs have exploded in recent months, as NBA video highlights, memes, digital art and even a tweet sell for six or seven figures. While proponents say NFTs, which assign ownership of any digital asset on the blockchain, will not only change the art world but could be applied to physical goods like homes and property. Sales of NFTs have now topped $500 million, according to many estimates."
He added:
"There are going to be hundreds of thousands of people from around the world who are going to adopt this medium, a digitally native medium to monetize art. There is going to be an economy around it. The piece is going to take on a life of its own, that's what makes NFTs really interesting. It may not just be a piece of art, it can become thousands of other things. But I won't be selling it anytime soon."
