However, putting them out of their misery kickstarts your own into high gear, as you're forced to face a life without your beloved pet by your side.
You trust the vet to administer the drugs that will painlessly release your pet over the rainbow bridge, assuming that's just a normal part of their day-to-day tasks. Yet how does euthanizing pets affect veterinarians?
Veterinarian Brenda Gough from Burford, Ontario, has recently shared what it is like to put down her clients’ beloved animals in a heartfelt Facebook post that's since gone viral.
Brenda’s words pulsate with honesty, which explains how they have received more than 112k reactions and 123k shares.
Brenda has been working as a small animal veterinarian for the last 24 years; her practice mainly handles dogs and cats. She is also a horse lover and owns an equestrian facility.
Growing up, Brenda’s father worked as a veterinarian and so she was raised in a vet clinic and she admits inspired her own future working with animals.
While her job is full of many positive things and the chance to help many animals each week, she is also tasked with putting down around two pets per week. In some rare instances she has had to put down as many as three to four animals in only one day.
And no matter how often she does it, it never gets easier.
She has to frequently unwind and spend some time alone after these painful experiences. She turns to her family for support, and thankfully, they're incredibly supportive of what she does.
While Brenda had been thinking about how euthanizing pets impacts her for a long time, one night, all of the thoughts just came rushing out of her and ended up in a Facebook post:
