Most Women Like Their Best Friend More Than Their Husband, According To Study

Female friendships are a force to be reckoned with. We support each other, whether it's during success, failure, or heartbreak. Friendship is a bond that should never be overlooked or underestimated. Especially as it turns out that most women like their best friend more than their husband.

From the Spice Girls to the cast of Friends, from Game of Thrones to the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, let's take a look at the best female friendships out there.

But first, is it true that women prefer their best friend to their husbands?

Over 50% of women like their best friend more than their husband.

Champneys Health Spa interviewed one-thousand five-hundred, and seventeen women in the United Kingdom and over 50% said that they prefer to hang out with their best friend than their husband.

What are the reasons for this then?

Communication is essential.

When asked why they prefer their best friend, 57% of women said that they could talk about everything with their friend, and 45% said that she listens more.

Marriages take a lot of work, and they can put a considerable amount of pressure on all parties involved. Having a friend that you can talk about it all with can be a major help in keeping the relationship going.

Sometimes you just need to vent to get it all out of your system, and that’s what besties are for.

41% of the women interviewed said that they preferred hanging with their best friend because she enjoys the same things, and 39% said that it’s because their best friend makes them they laugh until they cry.

It doesn’t matter how well you get on with your partner. It’s always going to be with your best friend that you end up in fits of hysterics. And, if you like the same things, you can do activities that you both enjoy together. It’s hard to compete with that.

There is often a shared history between besties.

Partners come and go, but friends are there for life. When a relationship turns sour, it’s always the best friend that makes everything seem alright. 29% of women interviewed said that they go further back with their best friend than they do with their partners and that they can truly be themselves with their BFF.

Marriage is important and it’s lovely, but if you already have your person, she’s not going to disappear just because you’ve fallen in love magically. Your best friend has seen you at your very worst, and you know she’ll always love you, despite it all.

Sometimes best friends are just better.

28% of women said that their best friends give better advice than their husbands. This is probably because they come at life from a similar angle. It can be hard for men to compete with a woman’s outlook on women’s issues.

Meanwhile, 26% said that their best friends are less irritating than their partners. What can we say? In many ways, our besties are our true soul mates. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the closest female friendships out there, and there’s only one place that we can start.

Maisie Williams (@maisie_williams) on

Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have been starring together on Game of Thrones for eight years. They’ve been playing sisters, Sansa and Arya Stark, since they were just fifteen and fourteen years old respectively, so it’s no wonder that they are so close!

They’ve been through a lot together and refer to each other as sisters and soul mates. This is the sort of friendship that people dream of.

Ashley Tisdale (@ashleytisdale) on

Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale were both stars on Disney’s High School Musical. They played singing rivals, Gabriella Montez and Sharpay Evans.

While Vanessa Hudgens has been in several movies since, including the Christmas Netflix movie, The Princess Switch, and the upcoming Bad Boys 3, Ashely Tisdale’s career has been a little quieter since her days on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. But they’ve remained besties throughout it all.

Naomi Watts (@naomiwatts) on

Australia's finest remain close in Hollywood.

When Naomi Watts was fourteen, she moved with her mother and brother from England out to Australia. It was there that she began acting, and it was also there that she met her best friend, Nicole Kidman; they were auditioning for the same bikini commercial and shared a cab ride home.

In 1991 they starred together in the movie, Flirting, and since then they have both seen their careers soar. Through it all, they've supported and encouraged each other and remain best friends to this day.

Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Okay, so Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods are technically at a low point in their friendship right now, after Jordyn was caught with Kylie’s big sister, Khloe’s, partner. However, that doesn’t change the fact that they’ve been super close besties for almost a decade.

They are almost sure to make up again soon, and, presumably, it will be around the time that Keeping Up With The Kardashians is struggling with its viewing numbers.

Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne) on

Cara and Riri are how friends should be.

Rihanna and Cara Delevingne first met at a fashion week five years ago, and they’ve never looked back. They even starred together in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

It only takes one look at these photos to see that theirs is a true friendship and not one that’s just for the cameras!

Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz are well known for the love that they share for each other. They are always super supportive, and it’s empowering to hear how well they speak of each other.

Meghan Markle and Priyanka Chopra first met when Priyanka was filming Quantico up in Montreal, which is near Meghan’s old base, Toronto, where she filmed Suits. The two quickly hit it off, bonding over their love of fashion.

While they have both become incredibly famous, in part because of their famous husbands (Prince Harry and Nick Jonas), the two remain supportive of each other. Priyanka often speaks out against Meghan’s critics, who reduce her to an accessory for the man she has married. We all need friends like this, regardless of how famous we are!

Liv Tyler and Kate Hudson went to school together. As they both had famous parents (Aerosmith frontman, Steven Tyler and actress, Goldie Hawn), it’s no wonder that they got on well.

Their families are close friends, and they often say they are more like sisters than friends. It’s easy to believe that when they’ve known each other for so long.

Jennifer Anniston had a huge birthday party earlier this year; anyone who’s anyone seemed to get an invite, and Kate Hudson posted these fantastic pictures with Gwyneth Paltrow and the birthday lady herself.

We all need friends that we can just kick back and have fun with. Of course, they’re not the only famous friends that Jen has.

Kate Hudson (@katehudson) on

Rachel and Monica have got nothing on these two.

Friends has been on our screens since 1994, and one of the biggest draws for the show was the dynamics between the friends.

Since then, their friendship has become stronger. Courteney Cox was the maid of honor at Jen’s wedding to Justin Theroux, and Jen is godmother to Courteney’s daughter, Coco. And they’re not the only Friends stars to remain friends!

Monica and Phoebe are friends for life, too.

The three ladies from Friends were amazing in showing how important female friendships are in life. Phoebe, in particular, often challenged the patriarchal views put forward by the men on screen. She also says in the show that her friends are the essential thing in the world to her.

It looks like, in real life, this is the case too. Courteney and Lisa often post photos together on social media, and Courteney even appeared on Lisa’s TV show, Web Therapy, too.

Courteney Cox (@courteneycoxofficial) on

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph stole the show at this year’s Oscars and reminded everyone why they are known for being the funniest people around. Between them, they have hosted SNL, and created and starred in Mean Girls, 30 Rock, and Bridesmaids!

These women are showing us that it is possible to pull each other up, rather than hold each other down. By supporting each other, they open up the way for more women to join them.
