A family photo recreation is exactly what it sounds like: you take an old picture, gather the same people years later, and copy the place, the pose, the clothes and even the facial expressions as closely as you can. Set side by side, the two shots show what time changed and, more interestingly, what it did not.
The idea is older than the internet. Photographers have practised "rephotography", shooting the same scene again after a gap of years, since the 19th century to record how cities and landscapes change. Families brought the same technique home, and social media turned it into a popular tradition for birthdays, anniversaries and holidays.

A daughter and her father in the kitchen
In the first photo a dad leans down to a toddler in a puffy red dress; in the second, the same daughter wears a floor-length red gown in what looks like the same kitchen. The cabinets have barely changed, and neither has the way he looks at her. Matching the colour of the outfit is a small detail that makes the whole recreation work.
A boy who promised to become his dad's partner
As a child he wrote that when he grew up he would be his dad's partner and catch "bad guys and burglars". The 1998 photo shows him as a little boy in a police car beside his father; the 2018 photo shows both men in uniform. Including the handwritten note turns a cute picture into a promise kept twenty years later.
Same shirt, same pose, a new generation
The poster's father was 29 when he held his first child at two weeks old. When the poster turned 29 and had his own first son, he recreated the moment, down to the Mickey Mouse T-shirt. It is a neat way of marking that a child has become a parent at the very same age.

According to the tweet, this father delivered his son at home himself. For his dad's birthday in December 2017, the son, then 21, climbed back into bed for a reenactment of his first minutes of life. Ten years of the same photo with a dog and a cat
Mr. Wong and his daughter Tiffany posed on the same sofa with a dog and a cat he had rescued from a shelter, year after year, starting with a photo from 2008 when she was a newborn; her mother took the pictures. The series went viral on Chinese social media. As Mr. Wong put it, "they will be good memories when we look back in 10 or 20 years."
A tribute to a grandfather who never met his grandson
The poster's husband was three months old when his father died in a car accident. The original shows father and baby on the couch with a newspaper; the new version shows the husband holding his own newborn son in the same way. It was made as a Christmas gift for his grandmother, linking three generations in a single frame.
One last photo with a beloved dog
Before saying goodbye to their dog of sixteen years, this family recreated their favourite photo with him. The sisters have grown from children into young women, while the dog went from puppy to elderly companion. Recreations like this show how pets mark whole chapters of a family's life.
From pre-K to graduate school with grandma
Nineteen years apart, the same grandmother stands with the same grandson at the start of school: once for pre-kindergarten, once for graduate school. In both pictures he wears a sweatshirt from the same university. It is a sweet reminder of who walked him to the door on the first day.

Two brothers and their toy car in Pripyat
According to the poster, these brothers grew up in Pripyat, the Ukrainian city of about 49,000 people that was evacuated on 27 April 1986, the day after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Decades later they returned to the abandoned town and found their old pedal car among the leaves. The city lies inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and can only be visited with authorised guides.

Three brothers once posed in superhero pyjamas in front of a bookcase. Thirty years later they found adult-sized onesies and full beards to match. The youngest still gets to be Robin, which may be the most realistic part of the whole recreation.

Long before phone cameras, a parent and a young son pressed their faces against an office copier and saved the result. Years later they repeated the joke with the son grown up. The grainy black-and-white look is part of the charm.

Two small children colour Easter eggs with their dad, one of them mid-shriek with excitement. Years later the grown children sit at a kitchen table with their father and copy every expression. Holiday traditions are a natural choice for recreations because the props are easy to find again.

The poster joked that her mother had not aged since 1988. How to recreate an old family photo
You do not need professional gear, just some patience. A few tips borrowed from rephotography work well at home:
- Find the original spot. If the place still exists, stand where the photographer stood. Look for a fixed reference such as a doorframe, fireplace or tree to line things up.
- Match the lens and distance. Old cameras often had a different field of view. Step back or zoom until objects in the background line up with the original.
- Copy the light. Shadows tell you the time of day and the season. Shooting at a similar hour makes the pair look far more convincing.
- Recreate the props. Matching clothes, colours and small objects, like a T-shirt, a toy or a note, does more than anything else to sell the effect.
- Hold the original in front of everyone. Let each person study their own expression and body position before you shoot.
- Take many frames. Then pick the closest match and place both images side by side with the years labelled.
Why these pictures stay with us
A single old photo tells you what someone looked like. A pair tells a story: a career chosen, a family grown, a friendship that survived decades, or a goodbye. If you have an old favourite in a drawer, the best time to recreate it is while everyone in it is still around to stand in the frame.
