Artist Performs Jaw-Dropping Underwater Choreography Holding Her Breath For 6 Whole Minutes In The World's Deepest Pool

Performed and directed by Julie Gautier, a French deep-sea diver, dancer, and filmmaker, AMA is a video performance project which follows the artist’s graceful underwater movements. Captured in the world’s deepest pool in Venice, the captivating underwater dance is named after the Japanese term for “woman of the sea.” The short film premiered in over 40 public screenings worldwide on International Women’s Day (March 8th, 2018). It's dedicated “to all the women of the world.”

AMA started with Gautier standing in the heavy rain, as the camera moved in to focus on her face. Then it cut to the artist lying motionless and paned across her body. When she slowly rose from the floor, it suddenly became obvious that Gautier was not just on the ground—she was actually inside the swimming pool.

Gautier was holding her breath for about six minutes while performing an unbelievable routine unlike anything else. She elegantly glided through the crystal-clear, calm water like a ballerina in slow motion. With every controlled movement, her silk-like hair and the fabric of her dress flew and “danced” with her. The film ended as Gautier gracefully rose to the surface, beneath a sparkling release of effervescent air bubbles.
