Trump's Climate Agreement Withdrawal Causes Caustic Comments From The Vatican That Compare Him To Flat-Earthers

Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement has caused caustic comments from world leaders, politicians, entrepreneurs, and basically everyone who doesn’t wish for terrible damage to be done to our planet.

The decision has even caused the anger of the Vatican, which Trump visited only one week ago. Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, head of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, made some critical remarks known in his interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

“Thinking that we need and must rely on coal and oil is like claiming that the Earth is not round. It’s an absurdity brought forward only to make money,” Sanchez Sorondo declared. “I believe that oil lobbyists are behind this decision. They are pushing for it. Big oil is pulling Trump's strings and he can’t oppose them, although this doesn’t mean he wants to.”

In Trump's state visit to the Vatican, Pope Francis gave him a copy of his encyclical on climate change, which he has written himself. Trump also talked about climate change with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State for the Vatican. The president of the United States promised to reconsider his discussion with the Bishop of Rome, but it's obvious that he didn’t think hard enough.

Bishop Sanchez Sorondo depicts the decision as a “huge slap in the face” for the Vatican. Also, he stressed how the decision goes against fundamental scientific facts. He specifically described Trump's view on climate change as “not only a calamity but also completely anti-science. It’s a disaster for everyone.”

It's not the first time that Republican politicians are at odds with the Argentinian Pope. When Pope Francis' officially visited the United States in 2015, prominent members of the GOP criticized him for his defense of the environment. Rick Santorum asked the Pope to leave the “science to scientists.”

This is disturbingly ignorant for two different reasons. First of all, there’s a general agreement among scientists that climate change is real, we are the cause of it, and we are running out of time to do anything about it. Secondly, Pope Francis is a certified chemical technician and has worked in a chemical lab before entering the seminar.

  1. Ironical. Vatican had condemned Galileo for proclaiming the truth. After 350 years the leader of the most advanced nation denies the reality and Vatican disagrees. The world indeed goes round. :)
