Man Uses Homemade Beehive To Save The Bees And It's Amazing

Entomologists say that beehives are disappearing really fast, and this is affecting more than just our honey supply. Products such as almost and cherries also exist thanks to bees since they are dependent on bee pollination to grow.


But why do bees disappear? One reason is pesticides and mites, while climate change also plays a big part. Surprisingly, each day many people are trying to do something to help by keeping their own beehives in their backyards. Also, city dwellers are learning how to build their own beehives in their fire escapes.

If you think it's just a trend, you're wrong! We need bees for our ecosystem.

So, if you'd like to know how to create your own beehive, then just follow these simple steps. (And don't forget: homemade hives are not only useful when it comes to saving the Earth's bee population. They can also offer you fresh honey.)


The first thing you need to do is buy a pre-made bottom beehive kit (find a good one in Amazon), then plywood and jars to customize it.

You'll also need:

• 1 piece of 2″ x 12″ x 6′ wood (cut 2 pieces to 22″ each for the sides);
• 1 piece of 2″ x 12″ x 6′ wood (cut 2 pieces to 18″ each for the front and back);
• 1 piece of 1″ x 1″ x 6′ wood (cut 2 pieces to 22″ each for the top frame's left and right sides);
• 1 piece of 1″ x 1″ x 6′ wood (cut 2 pieces to 18″ each for the top frame's front and back sides);
• 1 piece of thick plywood cut to 16″ x 20″; 12 big mouth quart-sized jars for the honeycomb;
• 1 box or crate of 1″ wood screws; 1 can of any dark wood stain;
• and, last but not least, your bees!

When you've successfully measured all of your plywood, then you're ready to cut each piece. Don't forget: you'll already have the beehive kit for the bottom. The plywood will be like a frame that you can stain the way you like.


Then, you'll have to build the top of the hive. That's where your mason jars will be attached. Take the 16″ x 20″ piece of plywood and measure and mark where you'd like your 12 holes to be placed.


Drill your holes with a hole saw, which should each be 3 1/2″ in diameter. Screw in the mason jars to test your holes and to ensure they will fit. You can now build the top frame by screwing the 4 pieces of 18″ and 22″ plywood together. You can stain the wood with your favorite color!


Now for the best part! Twist your 12 mason jars upside-down into each hole. Just be careful to ensure you always sanitize your jars before placing them on their respective places. The measurements for the holes should be correct. You must add also washers or shims that will support the weight of the honey.


Remember, the jars should be snug with less than a 1/16″ gap between the jar and the beehive hole, with the screw lids on. Place empty combs or starter strips into the jar.


Now it's the right time to add your bees! They will immediately become attracted to the comb, and start making honey. When the jars are full, put the caps back on. That way, the bees will continue working for your delicious organic honey. Great, isn't it?

The jars will be hot very fast as there's no ventilation. Just ensure to maintain them in the shade. Additionally, don't allow tour bees inside the areas around the jars. They could make a mess!

It may seem difficult, but these steps are all you really have to do to make a beautiful, stable home for your bees. After you do all these, it's their time to work!
