AIRPod’s Compressed-Air Vehicle Proposal and Its Promotional Claims

With small size, a tiny price, a claimed absence of tailpipe combustion emissions, fun and futuristic design, AIRPod was promoted as marking a turning point in the range of urban vehicles while renewing the idea of the automobile and transportation. You can drive with a joystick, it was promoted with a claimed running cost of one euro per 200 km and leaves no one indifferent in crept in traffic.

Those promotional claims do not account for the energy used to compress the air or manufacture the vehicle. Its small size was intended to make it easy to park, keeping still a large internal volume. The proposal sought to offer an alternative to petrol-powered urban travel.

AIRPod was described as part of the MDI production licence of “less than 500kg vehicles”, with manufacturing proposed in the same factories as OneFlowAir, following the original production concept proposed by MDI.

Compressed air still has an energy supply behind it

AIRPod’s promotional description focuses on the energy stored in compressed air. Assessing the whole system also requires asking how that air was compressed and what energy was used. A claimed running cost needs its assumptions, including local electricity prices, distance and test conditions. The 2015 price and range figures are therefore historical promotional claims, not verified current specifications or proof of pollution-free travel from production through use.
