Gregg Braden's The Divine Matrix: Claims, Quotes and the Science

Facebook ↗WhatsApp ↗

The Divine Matrix: Bridging Time, Space, Miracles, and Belief is a 2007 book by the American author and lecturer Gregg Braden, published by Hay House, and also the title of the talks and filmed lectures he gave to promote it. Its central claim is that a field of energy connects everything in the universe, and that human feeling and belief can influence that field, including our health. The book is popular in spiritual and New Age circles, but physicists do not accept its reading of quantum theory, and its most dramatic healing story has never been independently verified. This page explains what Braden argues, where his famous quotations really come from, and what science says.

Who is Gregg Braden?

Braden was born in 1954 in Kansas City, Missouri. According to his own biographies, he studied earth sciences and geology, earning a bachelor's degree in 1982, and then worked in computer roles for Phillips Petroleum and Martin Marietta Aerospace before becoming Cisco Systems' first technical operations manager in 1990. He left in 1991 to write and lecture full time. His books include The Isaiah Effect (2000), The God Code (2004), The Divine Matrix (2007), The Spontaneous Healing of Belief (2008), Fractal Time (2009) and The Wisdom Codes (2020). He has also been associated with the HeartMath Institute's Global Coherence Initiative and has hosted programmes on the streaming service Gaia.

The core idea of The Divine Matrix

Braden describes the "Divine Matrix" as a field of energy that he says underlies all matter, from stars and DNA to our relationships. He links it to ideas that go by many names in his talks: the quantum field, the quantum hologram, "the Field", or nature's mind. In his account, this field responds to human emotion, so that what we feel and believe with conviction can shape physical events.

His case rests on several kinds of material:

  • Quantum physics, especially the observer effect and quantum entanglement, which he presents as evidence that consciousness and matter are linked.
  • A handful of experiments from the 1990s, which he describes as showing that DNA, emotion and the environment interact at a distance. These include studies he attributes to researchers such as Vladimir Poponin and to work on emotions and DNA from HeartMath. They are small, rarely replicated and not part of mainstream physics or biology.
  • Spiritual traditions, which he reads as describing the same field in religious language.
  • Personal stories of healing, discussed below.

The book also offers practical "keys" for working with the field, centred on feeling as if a wished-for outcome has already happened, rather than simply asking for it.

Where the "matrix" quotation really comes from

Braden's title echoes a line he attributes to Max Planck, the German physicist who founded quantum theory. In Braden's English version, Planck ends a passage with:

"This mind is the matrix of all matter." — Max Planck, 1944, in Gregg Braden's translation

Planck did say something like this, but the details are often garbled online. The passage comes from a lecture called Das Wesen der Materie ("The Nature of Matter") that Planck gave in Florence in 1944, not from his 1918 Nobel Prize speech, as many books claim. The German sentence is "Dieser Geist ist der Urgrund aller Materie", which a more literal translation renders as "This spirit is the cause (or primal ground) of all matter". The word "matrix" is Braden's choice. Planck was expressing a personal religious and philosophical view at the end of his life, not a result of physics.

Similarly, when Stephen Hawking wrote in A Brief History of Time (1988) that a complete theory of physics would let us "know the mind of God", he was using a metaphor; Hawking was not a believer in a conscious cosmic field and later said plainly that he did not believe in God.

Two quotes often attributed to Tesla

Posts about Braden are often decorated with sayings credited to Nikola Tesla. One of the most shared is often attributed to him:

"If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration." — often attributed to Nikola Tesla

Researchers at the quotation archive Today in Science History mark this line as dubious. They have found no reliable primary source for it; the earliest trace is a later claim by Ralph Bergstresser that Tesla said it in conversation in 1942. Another line, in which Tesla supposedly calls his brain "only a receiver" of knowledge from a cosmic core, also circulates widely without a verified source. Both may sound like Tesla, who did write about invention in vivid terms, but neither should be quoted as his words without a hedge.

The bladder tumour video

The best-known part of Braden's talks is a short ultrasound clip. He says it was filmed at a medicine-free clinic in Beijing, often identified as a qigong centre, and that it shows a large bladder tumour in a woman shrinking and vanishing within minutes while practitioners beside her repeat a phrase meaning that the healing has already happened.

This story should be treated with great caution:

  • No peer-reviewed study, medical record or independent investigation has confirmed what the clip shows or what happened to the patient afterwards.
  • Ultrasound images change with the angle of the probe and the filling of the bladder, so an apparent "disappearance" on screen is not proof that a tumour has gone.
  • Cancer researchers have found no evidence that belief, chanting or emotional states alone can cure cancer, although stress reduction and social support can improve quality of life during treatment.

Feeling hopeful is valuable, and practices such as meditation can help many people cope with illness. But anyone facing a diagnosis should talk to a doctor and should not delay or replace medical treatment on the strength of a video.

What physicists actually mean by these terms

Several of the scientific words Braden uses have specific meanings that differ from his:

  • Quantum field. In quantum field theory, fields such as the electron field or the electromagnetic field are mathematical descriptions of particles and forces. They do not carry intentions or respond to emotion.
  • The observer effect. In quantum mechanics, "observation" means any physical interaction with a measuring device, not a conscious mind paying attention.
  • The holographic principle. Proposed by Gerard 't Hooft in 1993 and developed by Leonard Susskind in 1995 and by Juan Maldacena's AdS/CFT correspondence in 1997, it is a mathematical idea from quantum gravity: the information inside a region of space may be encoded on its boundary. It does not say that the universe is conscious or that each part contains the whole in a mystical sense.

Critics, including reviewers in Publishers Weekly, have described parts of Braden's work as pseudoscientific, and mainstream geneticists reject his claims about messages encoded in DNA. Braden replies that science itself is changing and needs to rethink consciousness. Readers can enjoy his books as spiritual reflection while keeping that distinction in mind.

Why the message still resonates

Part of Braden's appeal is a hopeful message that is easy to agree with: that we are connected to each other and to nature, and that our attitudes matter. Those ideas do not need quantum physics to be meaningful. Research on placebo effects, stress and social connection shows that the mind and body influence each other in real but limited ways. If The Divine Matrix encourages someone to slow down, feel gratitude or treat others with more care, that is worthwhile. The problems begin when spiritual metaphors are presented as proven science, or as a substitute for medicine.
