Foods That Fight Cancer? TIC10, Turmeric, Green Tea and the Evidence

Facebook ↗WhatsApp ↗

No single food has been shown to kill cancer or to replace cancer treatment. That is the plain answer to anyone searching for "foods that kill cancer". Turmeric, red grapes, green tea, tomatoes and colourful vegetables are worth eating as part of a balanced diet, but the laboratory results often quoted about them come from cells in dishes or from animals, at doses no meal can reach.

This page started life as a 2013 post that linked those five foods to a real scientific discovery: a molecule called TIC10, found by a team at Penn State. The two stories do not belong together, and the TIC10 story turned out to be far more interesting than the food list. Below is what the research actually showed, what happened to TIC10 next, and what each of the five foods can and cannot do.

Five Foods, TIC10 and Cancer: What the Research Showed

What the 2013 TIC10 study found

In February 2013, researchers at Penn State published a paper in Science Translational Medicine describing a small molecule they called TIC10. Its job, in their experiments, was to switch on the body's own production of a protein called TRAIL (short for tumour-necrosis-factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand). TRAIL can push some cancer cells into apoptosis, the orderly self-destruction that damaged cells are supposed to undergo.

Scientists had been interested in TRAIL for years, but giving the protein itself as a drug had disappointed: it broke down quickly in the body and did not reach every tumour. TIC10 offered a different route. Taken by mouth, it prompted both tumour cells and nearby normal cells to make more TRAIL, and in mice it crossed the blood–brain barrier, the tight filter that keeps many drugs out of the brain. That last point is why brain tumours became the obvious target.

Two things are worth stressing. First, this was work in cell cultures and mice, not a treatment for people. Second, TIC10 is a synthetic drug molecule. Nothing in the paper involved diet, and no food was shown to raise TRAIL the way TIC10 does.

From lab molecule to approved brain-tumour drug

TIC10 went on to clinical development under the code name ONC201. Over the following decade it went through clinical trials, and researchers learned that its main action is probably not TRAIL at all: it blocks dopamine D2 receptors and over-activates a mitochondrial enzyme called ClpP, which stresses cancer cells from the inside.

On 6 August 2025 the US Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated approval to the drug, now named dordaviprone and sold as Modeyso. It is approved for patients aged one year and older with diffuse midline glioma carrying the H3 K27M mutation whose disease has progressed after earlier treatment. These are rare, aggressive brain tumours that mostly affect children and young adults, and it is the first systemic drug approved specifically for them.

The results were meaningful but modest. In 50 patients pooled from five trials, tumours shrank in 11, or 22 per cent, and some of those responses lasted a year or more. Accelerated approval means the drug must still prove its benefit in a confirmatory trial. That is how real cancer progress usually looks: a narrow target, careful trials, honest numbers.

The five foods, one by one

The original list claimed these foods "inhibit tumour necrosis factor" and so fight cancer. Here is what the evidence supports today.

Turmeric and curcumin

Curcumin, the yellow pigment in turmeric, looks impressive in test tubes, which is partly the problem. Medicinal chemists list it among compounds that interfere with many laboratory assays and so produce misleading "hits". It is also poorly absorbed: most of what you swallow leaves the body unchanged. After roughly $150 million in US-funded research, there is still no proven medical use. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) adds a safety warning: liver damage has been reported in some people taking high-absorption curcumin supplements. Turmeric in curry is fine; concentrated capsules are another matter.

Red grapes and resveratrol

Resveratrol is a plant compound found in grape skins and red wine. Only around 0.5 per cent of an oral dose reaches the bloodstream in active form, and a cup of red grapes contains roughly a milligram or less. Reviews have found no evidence that resveratrol affects cancer in humans. Red wine is no shortcut either: alcohol itself is a well-established cause of several cancers.

Green tea

Green tea is rich in catechins, especially EGCG, which affects inflammatory signalling in lab studies. Large population studies on green tea and cancer risk have produced inconsistent results, according to the NCCIH. Drinking the tea is generally safe, but concentrated green tea extract in pills has been linked to rare cases of liver injury.

Tomatoes and lycopene

People who eat plenty of tomato products have, in some observational studies, slightly lower rates of certain cancers, especially prostate cancer. Such studies cannot separate the tomatoes from everything else about those people's lives, and trials of lycopene supplements have not shown a clear protective effect. A small study in which tomato juice lowered an inflammation marker in blood says nothing about tumours.

Fruit and vegetables

This is the one item with solid backing, though not as a cure. Diets high in vegetables, fruit, whole grains and fibre are associated with lower risk of some cancers, partly because they help people keep a healthy weight. The often-repeated Ohio State finding about purple cabbage pigments slowing colon cancer growth came from cells and rats, not people.

Why TNF and TRAIL got mixed up

The old post jumped from TRAIL to a list of foods said to block tumour necrosis factor (TNF). The names sound related, and both proteins belong to the same broad family, but they do different jobs. TRAIL can trigger death in some cancer cells. TNF-alpha is mainly a signal of inflammation. Lowering it does not switch TRAIL on, and dampening inflammation is not the same as killing a tumour. In fact, drugs that strongly block TNF are used for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, not for treating cancer.

The same post also cited a 2012 laboratory finding that chemotherapy can prompt damaged healthy cells to release a protein that helps tumour cells survive later treatment. That research was real and useful: it helped explain why some cancers become resistant. It did not show that chemotherapy "boosts cancer" overall, and it was never a reason to refuse treatment.

Common myths about food and cancer

  • "A healthy immune system always destroys cancer." The immune system does attack some abnormal cells, but tumours develop precisely because cancer cells evade it. Immunotherapy drugs exist to help it do a job it often cannot do alone.
  • "Food is medicine, drugs are poison." Diet shapes long-term risk. Once cancer is diagnosed, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted drugs and immunotherapy are what change outcomes. The US National Cancer Institute says no food or special diet has been proved to control cancer.
  • "If it works in a dish, it works in you." Huge numbers of compounds kill cancer cells in a dish. Very few survive digestion, reach the tumour at a useful dose and prove safe in people.
  • "Natural means harmless." Turmeric and green tea extracts can injure the liver, and some supplements interfere with chemotherapy.

What actually helps

For lowering risk, the boring advice holds up: do not smoke, limit alcohol, stay active, keep a healthy weight, eat plenty of plants and fibre, protect your skin from the sun, get vaccinated against HPV and hepatitis B, and take part in screening programmes.

For people already in treatment, food matters in a different way. Eating enough protein and calories helps the body cope with surgery and chemotherapy, and a dietitian can help when appetite, taste or digestion change. If you take any supplement, even a vitamin, tell your cancer team, because some products interact with treatment. For anything about your own diagnosis or diet, talk to a doctor.

The real lesson of TIC10 is hopeful. A molecule first studied in mice in 2013 became an approved medicine twelve years later for children and adults with one of the hardest brain tumours to treat. That is a better story than any promise about grapes.

  11. The article, key word article is on 5 foods. The article is not a book on ALL foods that can help the body maintain health. There are many foods, many ways of healthy living and some of us realize that one article/source of information does not represent "the only way". Bottom Line, the article is just promoting healthy foods and encouraging a healthier lifestyle including the foods we eat will help body health.

  14. You go with what you believe in. Modern medicine aligns with drugs as a cure. Natural medicine uses herbs and food. Agree or disagree, it matters not, you do what you got to do. If someone disagrees, so be it.

  17. I have a tendency to believe that Chris is not who he says he is. As stated earlier in another comment I believe he is a paid hack for the pharmaceuticals. Big business does manage it's profiles on line. It sways and creates doubts about the things that can hurt it's Return on Investment ie. Shareholder profits.

When reading similar comments in other forums, I try to go to the profile of the writer. It always seems that many of the profiles of these people that defend pharma, oil & gas, insurance industries, etc. have no substance, they seem created. And I know that many are. Before calling me a conspiracy nut, remember that the biggest conspiracy is that "there are no conspiracies!"

So what's the answer? Go with what resonates with you. Absolute truth is difficult to find in a world where ROI (return on investment) drives values.

Hopefully someday we will move to a place where ROL (return on life) is the motivating factor. Until then trust your body to tell you what you need.

  18. The focus of the cancer research establishment has been to understand cancer, but mostly in the context of finding drugs to treat it. It is a testament to the low level of confidence that medical doctors have in chemotherapy that statistics indicate that as many
as 75 percent of MDs who contract cancer refuse chemotherapy. There's something wrong here - something these 75 percent know that the rest of us don't.
