23 Mind-Bending Facts About Time and History, Fact-Checked

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - The first pyramids were built while the woolly mammoth was still alive.

Some facts about time feel wrong the first time you hear them. Cleopatra is closer in time to the first Pizza Hut than to the building of the Great Pyramid. Woolly mammoths were still alive on a remote Arctic island while Egyptians were hauling stone at Giza. A former US president who took office in 1841 had a grandson who lived until 2025.

Each of these works for the same reason: we picture history as a few big blocks (“ancient”, “medieval”, “modern”) and forget how long each block really lasted. Ancient Egypt alone spans roughly three thousand years, far longer than the gap between the Roman Empire and the smartphone.

Below are 23 of the best-known “time perspective” facts, grouped by theme. For each one we checked the dates against reference sources, kept what holds up, and flagged the ones that have changed since they first went viral in 2014. A few needed correcting, and those corrections turn out to be just as interesting as the original claims.

Ancient history is closer, and longer, than it looks

1. Cleopatra lived closer to Pizza Hut than to the Great Pyramid

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - Cleopatra lived closer to the building of Pizza Hut than the pyramids.

The Great Pyramid of Giza was finished around 2560 BC. Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt, died in 30 BC, about 2,500 years later. Brothers Dan and Frank Carney opened the first Pizza Hut in Wichita, Kansas, in 1958, under 2,000 years after her death. To Cleopatra, the pyramids were already ancient monuments.

2. Oxford was teaching students before the Aztec capital existed

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time -Oxford University is older than the Aztecs.

There is evidence of teaching at Oxford as early as 1096, and the university grew quickly after 1167, when Henry II stopped English students from attending the University of Paris. Tenochtitlan, the island city at the heart of the Aztec world, is traditionally dated to 1325. The Mexica people existed before that, so the fair version of the fact is that Oxford is older than the Aztec capital and its empire.

3. The pyramids were built while woolly mammoths still lived

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - The first pyramids were built while the woolly mammoth was still alive.

Most woolly mammoths vanished at the end of the last Ice Age, but a small population survived on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean until about 4,000 years ago, around 2000 BC. Egypt’s first pyramid, built for King Djoser, and the Great Pyramid both came several centuries earlier. Some older versions of this fact give 1650 BC for the last mammoths, which is later than current estimates, but the overlap with pyramid building is real either way.

4. Harvard is older than calculus

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - Harvard University was founded before calculus was derived.

Harvard was founded in 1636, making it the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Isaac Newton worked out his “method of fluxions” in the mid-1660s, and Gottfried Leibniz published his version of calculus in 1684. Ideas behind calculus go back much further, to Archimedes and to mathematicians in medieval India, but the formal toolkit students learn today arrived after Harvard opened its doors.

Inventions that bent the timeline

5. We now take more photos in minutes than the 1800s took in total

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time -Every two minutes, we take as many photos as all of humanity took during the 1800s.

The oldest surviving camera photograph is Joseph Nicéphore Niépce’s View from the Window at Le Gras, made around 1826 or 1827 and needing an exposure of many hours. The comparison with the 1800s comes from a 2011 estimate by the photo site 1000memories, which also forecast about 880 billion photos for 2014. Commonly cited industry estimates have since passed a trillion photos a year, so the gap has only grown.

6. It took 66 years to go from first flight to the Moon

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - In the span of 66 years, we went from taking flight to landing on the moon.

On 17 December 1903 the Wright brothers made four short powered flights near Kitty Hawk; the longest lasted 59 seconds. Thirty-eight years later, aircraft carriers made the attack on Pearl Harbor possible, and in July 1969 Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. A child who read about the Wrights in the newspaper could have watched the Moon landing on television as a grandparent.

7. A graphing calculator outruns the Apollo 11 guidance computer

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - There is more processing power in a TI-83 calculator than in the computer that landed Apollo 11 on the moon.

The Apollo Guidance Computer, designed at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, ran its operations at 1.024 MHz and had 2,048 words of erasable memory plus 36,864 words of fixed “core rope” memory. A TI-83 calculator’s Z80 processor runs at about 6 MHz. The comparison is fair on raw speed, but the Apollo computer was a carefully engineered real-time system backed by large computers on the ground, which is why it could fly a spacecraft and the calculator cannot.

8. The fax machine is as old as the Oregon Trail migration

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time -The fax machine was invented the same year people were traveling the Oregon Trail.

Scottish inventor Alexander Bain patented his “electric printing telegraph”, the ancestor of the fax, in Britain on 27 May 1843. That same year, an estimated 700 to 1,000 settlers set out on the Great Migration of 1843, the first large wagon train to Oregon. Fax machines only became common in offices in the 1970s and 1980s, more than a century later.

9. A 1991 electronics ad fits inside one phone

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - Everything in this 1991 RadioShack ad exists in a single smartphone.

In 2014 Buffalo writer Steve Cichon pointed out that almost every gadget in a 1991 RadioShack newspaper ad, from the camcorder to the answering machine, is now an app or feature on a smartphone. The engine behind that shift is often summed up as Moore’s law: Intel co-founder Gordon Moore predicted in 1965 that chip components would double every year, then revised it in 1975 to about every two years. The popular “every 18 months” version came from his colleague David House.

Lives that stretch across centuries

10. Will Smith passed Uncle Phil’s age on the show

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - Will Smith is now older than Uncle Phil was at the beginning of

James Avery, who played Philip Banks, was born on 27 November 1945, so he was 44 when The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered in September 1990. Will Smith, born in September 1968, turned 45 in 2013, which made the fact true when it went viral. Avery died on 31 December 2013. Smith turns 58 in 2026.

11. The oldest living person and the US Constitution

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - The oldest living person's birth is closer to the signing of the Constitution than present day.

In 2014 the world’s oldest person was Misao Okawa of Japan, born on 5 March 1898. Her birth was 111 years after the US Constitution was signed in 1787 and 116 years before 2014, so the claim held. She died in 2015 aged 117. Today it no longer works: as of October 2026, the oldest verified living person is Ethel Caterham of the United Kingdom, born on 21 August 1909, whose birth is now closer to the present than to 1787.

12. A president from 1841 had grandsons alive in the 21st century

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - John Tyler, America's 10th President, has two living grandchildren.

John Tyler (1790–1862), the 10th US president, took office in 1841. His son Lyon Gardiner Tyler was born in 1853, when John was 63, and Lyon in turn had sons in his seventies: Lyon Jr. in the mid-1920s and Harrison Ruffin Tyler in 1928. Lyon Jr. died in 2020, and Harrison died on 25 May 2025 at 96, so the line of living grandsons has now ended.

13. Betty White was older than sliced bread

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - Betty White is older than sliced bread.

Betty White was born on 17 January 1922. Pre-sliced bread first went on sale on 7 July 1928, when the Chillicothe Baking Company in Missouri used Otto Rohwedder’s slicing machine. She enjoyed the comparison for years and died on 31 December 2021, just 17 days short of her 100th birthday.

14. Some whales alive today were born before Moby-Dick

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - There are whales alive today who were born before Moby Dick was written.

Bowhead whales are the longest-lived mammals known. A 1999 study using chemical changes in the whales’ eyes estimated one male at about 211 years old, and in 2007 a bowhead caught off Alaska carried a bomb-lance head made between 1879 and 1885. Herman Melville published Moby-Dick in 1851, so the oldest bowheads in the Arctic today could plausibly predate the novel. Note that the photo illustrating this fact shows a humpback whale, not a bowhead.

Odd overlaps in modern history

15. France used the guillotine in the year Star Wars opened

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - France was still executing people by guillotine when Star Wars came out.

Star Wars opened in US cinemas on 25 May 1977. On 10 September that year, Hamida Djandoubi was executed by guillotine in Marseille, the last execution in France and the last time any government used the guillotine. France abolished the death penalty on 9 October 1981.

16. The Warner brothers started out while the Ottoman Empire still stood

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - When Warner Brothers formed, the Ottoman Empire was still alive.

Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner began showing films in the 1900s and founded the Warner Features Company in 1910, while the Ottoman Empire still ruled a large part of the Middle East. The studio as we know it, Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc., was founded on 4 April 1923, a few months after the Ottoman sultanate was abolished on 1 November 1922; the Republic of Turkey was proclaimed in October 1923. The empire’s final decade also saw the genocides of Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians.

17. The Cubs’ title drought outlasted voting restrictions on women

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - The last time the Chicago Cubs won a World Series, women were not allowed to vote.

The Chicago Cubs won the World Series in 1907 and 1908, then went 108 years without another title. American women gained a constitutional right to vote with the 19th Amendment in 1920. The drought finally ended in November 2016, so this fact now belongs firmly in the past tense.

18. Fifty-six years of Olympic vaulting

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time -This is what the difference in Olympic Gold looks like across 56 years of women’s vault.

The image compares Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won the vault at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, with American McKayla Maroney’s vault from the London 2012 era. One correction: Maroney did not win the 2012 Olympic vault. She fell on her second vault and took silver behind Romania’s Sandra Izbașa, though she was a two-time world vault champion (2011 and 2013) and won team gold in London.

Deep time and the human present

19. Your brain is always running slightly behind

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time -Humans never fully experience the 'present' - we're always living in the past.

Neuroscientist David Eagleman has argued that the brain waits for signals from different senses to arrive, then stitches them into one “now”, so what we experience lags reality by roughly a tenth of a second (figures around 80 milliseconds are often quoted). This is a theory of perception, not a precise measurement, but the delay is why a blink or a fast ball can seem to happen “before” we notice it.

20. T. rex is closer to you than to Stegosaurus

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - There was more time between the Stegosaurus and the Tyrannosaurus Rex than between the Tyrannosaurus Rex and you.

Stegosaurus lived about 155 to 145 million years ago, in the Late Jurassic. Tyrannosaurus rex lived about 68 to 66 million years ago, at the very end of the Cretaceous. That means roughly 80 million years separate the two famous dinosaurs, while only about 66 million separate T. rex from us.

21. The world’s population has doubled within living memory

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - If you’re over 45, the world population has doubled in your lifetime.

When this fact went viral, the world had about 7.2 billion people and the 1968 figure was about 3.5 billion. The numbers have moved on: the world reached 4 billion in 1974 and, according to the United Nations, 8 billion on 15 November 2022. Today the doubling applies to anyone born in or before about 1974, so roughly people in their early fifties and older.

22. If Earth’s history were one year, humans arrive in the last half hour

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - If the history of Earth were compressed to a single year, modern humans would appear on December 31st at about 11:58pm.

Squeeze Earth’s 4.54 billion years into a single calendar year and each “day” covers about 12.4 million years. Homo sapiens, at roughly 200,000 to 300,000 years old, appear between about 11:25 and 11:37 pm on 31 December, and everything since the invention of writing fits in the final half minute. The often-quoted “11:58 pm” is a little too late. Carl Sagan’s famous Cosmic Calendar uses the age of the universe instead, which pushes humans to about 11:52 pm.

23. What is happening in the world right now

Unbelievable...These 23 Mind Blowing Facts Will DESTROY Your Understanding Of Time - If that’s not enough, this is what’s happening in the world at this very moment.

The final image is Frequency, comic number 1331 by xkcd creator Randall Munroe. Each little panel blinks at the real-world rate of an event, such as a birth, a death or a commercial flight taking off, so watching it for a minute turns statistics into a rhythm you can feel.

Why these comparisons fool us, and how to use them

Almost every fact on this list exploits the same mental shortcut. We remember history as labelled boxes and imagine the boxes are similar sizes. In reality “Ancient Egypt” lasted far longer than “the modern world”, and two people we file in different eras can overlap by decades.

A few habits help when you meet a new fact of this kind:

  • Do the subtraction. Most claims rest on two dates; checking both takes a minute.
  • Ask “as of when?” Facts about the oldest person, living grandchildren or sports droughts expire. Several on this list did.
  • Watch for loose definitions. “Older than the Aztecs” depends on whether you mean the people, the city or the empire.
  • Look for the original source. Viral images often drop the details, as with the Olympic vault caption.

Used carefully, these comparisons are a good way to teach history. They show children and adults alike that the past is not a distant fog but a chain of overlapping lives, and that the chain is shorter than it looks.
