6 Smart Ways To Develop Your Intelligence

“It is not that I'm so smart. But I stay with the questions much longer.” ― Albert Einstein

Intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge.

There are many different facets of intelligence that all make up our mind. Personal growth means fostering and training the many different kinds of intelligence available to us.

While there are limits based on fundamental intelligence levels, recent studies have shown that it's possible to increase your intelligence.

Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus.

This article will teach you how to develop your intelligence by doing everyday things (or by avoiding some daily activities).

Don't forget that intelligence is sexy as well.

“It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently.” -Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Here are the six simple steps:

1) Try doing one single thing at a time.

Many people are under the wrong impression that multitasking is good for their brain because it shows fast thinking and it proves the ability to focus on many things simultaneously. However, according to a research conducted at Stanford University, multitasking is actually less productive than doing a single thing at a time. In fact, the research proved that multitasking could not only slow you down but also lower your IQ.

A similar study conducted at the University of London showed that participants who multitasked during cognitive tasks experienced IQ score declines that were similar to what they’d expect if they had smoked marijuana or stayed up all night. IQ drops of 15 points for multitasking men lowered their scores to the average range of an 8-year-old child.

2) Include certain foods in your diet.

As you've probably heard many times, nutrition can help in many aspects of your life. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, there are certain foods that can increase your intelligence: krill oil, organic vegetables, raw eggs, and blueberries!

On the contrary, eating pre-cooked and processed foods as well as too much sugar can damage your intelligence. Some easy ways to avoid sugar in your diet is to cut out soda and candy, but also watch out for less obvious sources like fruit juice.

3) Avoid using Google too much.

Did you know that the average number of Google searches per day has grown from 9,800 in 1998 to over 4.7 trillion today? (source) According to Academic Earth, the more we rely on Google to get information, the less our brains function. Our brains use information stored in the long-term memory to facilitate critical thinking. We need these unique memories to understand and interact with the world around us. If we rely on Google to store our knowledge, we may be losing an important part of our identity.

4) Socialize more.

As we humans are social animals, we need to socialize in our everyday lives. Studies show that people who socialize much perform better on cognitive tests than those who don’t.

As it's clearly stated by fgbt, "our brains are hardwired for socialization, and we need that human bond in order to think and function clearly. Studies have shown that children deprived of social contact are more likely to develop psychosocial disorders, and adults who have little social support are at risk of depression. Interacting with others helps maintain brain function and mental acuity. One large study from Michigan University found that people of all ages who talked and socialized with friends, family, and neighbors performed better on cognitive tests than those who didn’t talk or share their feelings with others".

5) Sleep more.

There is a reason why our body needs to rest. There is a reason why we fall asleep like we need to charge our batteries. A good night's sleep can boost your intelligence. Getting shut-eye helps builds nerve cells linked with learning. On the other hand, poor sleep damages your thinking skills; it makes you forgetful and affects your interpretation of events. This can prevent you from judging quickly and correctly.

6) Question more - Read more

We all know Socrates right? Well, what did this man tried to make us realize and understand deeper? “I know I'm intelligent because I know that I know nothing.” We really don't know what we don't know. Reading is the way to acknowledge your ignorance. Reading and questioning will make you research further in order to find the truth, the light. By reading books that have been written centuries or thousands of years ago, we truly connect ourselves to the past of our shared human history. Human problems that are being faced nowadays have not been created nowadays and intelligence throughout centuries and millenniums is making an effort to solve them.

You should also remember Howard Gardner's theory, according to whom there are multiple intelligences. Have you thought about what is your dominant intelligence?

Use your Intelligence!

“People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.” -Søren Kierkegaard
