Donald Trump hit out at Russia after Moscow threatened to shoot down any missiles to be fired at Syria responding to an alleged chemical weapons attack.

On Twitter, Trump told Russia to "get ready".

In light of that, the following list includes the ten most secure countries to live in should a third world war occur.

So for the umpteenth time since the current US president took office, some people think World War 3 is nigh, and although the nature of the war (economic, nuclear, cyber warfare) is unknown, there are expectations that it will be horrible.

10. Ireland

Ireland practices military neutrality and, therefore, has been internationally neutral since the '30s. If WW3 does break out, the country will probably keep its neutrality.

9. Switzerland

Switzerland has the oldest history of countries' military neutrality, established in 1815 during the Treaty of Paris. They haven't participated in a foreign war since then. The country's mountains are also fortified against foreign invasion, which makes it an ideal place to stow away if a world war happens.

8. Slovenia

Slovenia’s developing solar, thermal, and hydroelectric power sources show that if there's a global conflict, they do not need to rely on another country for energy. Coupled with the fact that they mostly managed to stay out of both WW1 and WW2, we can only assume they’ll continue this isolationist behavior and steer clear of international conflicts.

7. Fiji

Fiji, the famous island in the south pacific ocean, is geographically in an isolated position, and, as a result, it is a reasonably safe place. It is not landlocked, and its government has traditionally kept out of international conflicts.

6. Denmark

Denmark is this list's outlier: although it might get dragged into war through its status in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, it has a trump card: Greenland. This region is not politically aligned, and it is relatively remote.

5. Austria

Austria ranks fourth out of 163 countries that are on the Global Peace Index 2017. If that does not make you believe it, note that in the areas of conflict, militarization, security, and society it scored below 1.5 out of five.

4. Portugal

Portugal comes in at third in the Global Peace Index and, according to Politico, has become an “oasis of stability”.

Far-right populism, that's sweeping across Europe, remains mostly absent in this country and they've kept out of most conflicts since the Second World War, making the nation stable internally and externally.

3. New Zealand

Among the best things going for New Zealand is its commitment to self-sustenance: the country gets over half of the electricity from hydroelectric power, and also has fertile land, which makes crop production possible if they are cut off from the rest of the world.

New Zealand is also a solid choice for a home in the event of an international conflict.

2. Canada

Canada is the eighth most peaceful country worldwide according to the Global Peace Index 2017. Canada scored a 1.1 out of 5 for domestic and international conflict, which makes it one of the least involved countries concerning a possible war.

1. Iceland

The country scored a one on the Global Peace Index. That makes Iceland the most peaceful nation worldwide.

Also, it is geographically far away from powers that are involved in the global conflict (like America, North Korea, Iran, and Russia), making it the best place to hide.

  1. Denmark, a country that's as flat as it gets, parted in WW2 + has a membership in the NATO is included, and not Sweden?? How an island (with its inhabitants included) that's been completely neglected for god knows how many decades make Denmark safer than a country that managed to keep its neutrality throughout the WW2, for then to keep it up during the entire cold war -despite their geographic position, is beyond me.. Sweden has hardly uttered a stand in an international matter since the Napoleon wars ended! They even gave away the land area they got from their neighboring country (today known as Denmark & Norway) that sided with Napoleon in war! The habitants of area in question, today known as Norway, prepared for war as they just declared their independence (too grumpy for being sacrificed to reconnect with today's Denmark), but the Swedish government actually just backed down, and let it pass, -just like that! If they were captured, they'd most likely be welcoming them with meatballs, as they just made a polite request for everybody to be kind to one another (ha ha).
