AFTER BEING THE VICTIM OF BULLYING AT HER SCHOOL, 16 YEAR-OLD NATALIE HAMPTON CREATED AN INNOVATIVE APP TO PREVENT OTHER STUDENTS FROM GOING THROUGH THE SAME NIGHTMARE SHE DID.

I wish there was something like this when I was in school. I remember those feelings of dread when I would be getting ready to catch the bus…all because of the inevitable loneliness and anxiety experienced during lunch. Sitting there by myself left me open to ridicule and harassment from certain students- it made me an easy target.

SO WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THE SIT WITH US APP, I KNEW I HAD TO LEARN MORE.

Sherman Oaks, California is the home of the app’s designer, 16 year-old Natalie Hampton. She was bullied through her 7th and 8th grade years when she attended an all-girl school, and wanted to find a way to help others who are experiencing the same painful nightmare she did.

The Sit With Us app was launched on September 9th and aims to replace public embarrassment with private acceptance.

“This way it’s very private. It’s through the phone. No one else has to know,” Natalie told NPR. “And you know that you’re not going to be rejected once you get to the table.”

The brilliant app works like this:

FIRST, A STUDENT SIGNS IN WITH THEIR EMAIL OR FACEBOOK

THEY THEN DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO BE AN ‘AMBASSADOR’ AND CREATE LUNCH INVITES FOR OTHER STUDENTS

Students can then search for lunch groups to join, or create their own

Students can even chat with their friends through the app to discuss lunch events

“Some are crying for help,” Natalie told the Daily News. “I want to use social media, which can be harmful, and use it for a change and to do something good.”

It’s been two weeks and Sit With Us seems to be doing well.

“People are already posting open lunches at my school,” she told NPR. “So I’m very excited that things are already kicking off with a great start.”
